Part II - The Professor
"You have to move, Parr. Can't you see that you're in my seat?"
The immediate response was I don't see your name on it. But since I was no longer a bratty preteen, I had to hold myself to a higher level of maturity. However, the appropriate response wasn't as much fun.
"Hello, Astrid," I replied coolly, "I'm afraid that I'm already sitting here, but the seat beside me is open if you'd like?"
Astrid Brunel could have been a model if she felt so inclined. With hair a shimmering shade of cappuccino brown, cascading down to her waist in pretty rivulets that never tangled, never got ratty and never frizzed, the girl stood tall even without the aid of her fashionable, heeled ankle boots. Her face would be absolutely gorgeous - if she wasn't frowning at me as if I was the bane of her existence.
"Why would I want to sit next to you?" Astrid's chestnut brown eyes narrowed, "So you can copy down my notes when I'm not looking and get the credit for my hard work?"
Sensing that this would be the start of a long and tedious conversation, I closed my textbook and pulled it under my notebook. All of my things were already set in place - so I could grab anything that I needed to make a quick note, check another textbook for reference or do away with something that was cluttering my space. From where she was standing, Astrid's shadow fell across me menacingly. I had to hand it to her. Even wearing a peach keyhole shirt, a grey blazer and black leggings, she gave off an aura of authority and menace that I simply couldn't understand.
"Look, Astrid," I appeased, "I would've traded with you, but I've already got all my things organised. Can't you just pick a different seat for today?"
"Why can't you just scootch over and let me sit here?" She harrumphed.
"I just told you why," My blood started to boil. "Also, I arrived at the class ten minutes early. I was the first one through the door and I was the first one to get to the seat so, in all fairness, I have a right to sit here. You are welcome to sit next to me - if you can even stand to breathe the same air as me for more than two seconds - or you can use one of the seventy other seats that are available. It's your choice, Elle Woods."
The girl flushed - a pink that probably clashed with her shirt - and she walked towards me. With an arch expression on her face, she pointed her nail into my chest and prodded me harshly.
"First of all, that's a compliment," Astrid snapped, "Second of all, you better listen to the words coming out of my mouth before you make trouble. You and I have been feuding for years - "
"A one-sided feud, really," I sighed.
"- but all that's going to change," Astrid's lips parted in an eerie smile. "You don't know it yet, but this is going to be my semester. I'm finally going to get the respect and recognition that I deserve. You're going to understand what it feels like to be in my shadow, to play second fiddle to me. And another thing - "
Suddenly, the sound of the doors bursting open cracked through the room. Students flinched and turned towards the loud sound, but nothing but the wind had caused the doors to bang. Astrid's face suddenly went slack and her arms went around her torso, holding them tightly for support. I could see the goosebumps rising on her arms as she shivered so violently that her teeth clacked together. Even her hair had been displaced by the bitter chill.
"We'll resume this later," Astrid declared. "Not even the heat of my anger can warm me."
The girl then turned around with a flip of her hair, which smacked me in the face with the force of a freight train, and disappeared somewhere within the room.
