At first glance, her family seemed normal, large but normal. They were known around the neighborhood for helping others and being kind but Ophelia had to disagree. Her family might be nice to the outside but to her not so much.

There was barely a day when her parents didn't yell at her. Every time she would come home someone would start yelling causing a fight. It was a daily occurrence.

She took deep breaths and slowly walked towards the door, whispering prayers as she opened it. She hoped today was different.

"Where have you been?" A stern voice called out. Ophelia froze in her tracks. She didn't expect to be yelled at this soon.

"You are late. How many times do I have to tell you that you have to call if practice takes longer?" The person continued to yell.

"I'm sorry Mom, it won't happen again." Ophelia answered almost too gently. Her mother had a much stronger voice and wasn't afraid to use it. Ophelia was too tired to fight.

"Of course you are. Your teacher called about some kind of meeting for a school trip. Why didn't you tell us that?" Her mother restlessly continued.

"I didn't know there was a meeting." Ophelia weakly answered wanting this conversation to end as soon as possible.

"Don't lie to me. You know I hate it when you lie. Alright, we'll talk when your father gets home. Now go on." Her mother left and Ophelia felt relief wash over her. She picked up her bags and went into her room.

So tired, and her bed looked so cozy, just waiting for her. But homework and studying had to be done.

Soon there will be a teacher-parent meeting and she knew her parents would see her grades up close. She wasn't dumb, she just wasn't gifted in many subjects. Her grades already didn't look too good and she had been trying to get better. It was only the beginning of the school year, but she already felt like a failure. Nothing was going as she planned and it stressed her out.
