"Margaux, will you stop for one minute and listen?" asked Theseus. "I have something important to ask you."
"Can it wait until I've finished the proposal for the department?" I retorted. I shuffled the papers around to find the one regarding the spacing for dragons both in and out of captivity.
"Margaux, you're always working or doing something. I just need a minute of your time. It won't take as long as you think it will." I placed my work down and looked at Theseus. I crossed my arms and straightened my posture. "I was wondering if you would consider marrying me, Margaux. I... I love you, always and forever. You know I will do anything for you, go anywhere for you. So, will you marry me, Margaux Romanov Windsor?" My heart began to race, my mind racing.
"I... Theo."
"I've been thinking about this for a while, and there's never going to be a good moment. But now's the best time as any." I didn't know what to say. I wanted to say yes, to pull him close, but why did I think it was a bad idea to say it? Why did part of me think this was the worst thing to happen? That it wasn't meant to be.
"Theseus. I can't," I uttered. His eyes widened and turned around to face the window. "I don't think we could ever truly be happy together. I'm sorry." I grabbed my work and walked out the front door into the hallway. What did I just do? I gulped and held back the tears. I walked back to my office and shut the door. It was pitch black and I let out a cry and whimper. I covered my mouth and let out a silent scream.
"Margaux? Why's your door locked? I have some more paperwork," Tilly said, rattling the doorknob. I stood up and unlocked the door and turned on the light. I muttered an apology and Tilly silently set the work down without saying a word. "Rumors are swirling about Theseus and someone else. No one dares to ask questions or say a word for fear of getting hexed. I just wanted to make sure everything was okay.""Everything's fine," I told her, my voice wavering slightly. "Don't. Another time, not here." Tilly nodded, understanding that something big happened between Theseus and me.
"Oh, one last thing. Theseus wanted to say he's sorry and would like to have a proper discussion with you regarding your last conversation. He feels as though there was some miscommunication regarding whatever it was." I thanked her before the door closed. My heart was still racing as I sat down. I gulped for air before shifting my attention back to my work. I couldn't waste any more time on stupid things. I had to focus on my work. Love would get in my way. I fought to get the positions I had and love would just hold me back and ruin the progress I had made. There had to be someone out there I could be happy with.
"I'm letting you down, Mum. I'm sorry," I whispered shakily. "I know I promised you, but I can't keep it. Not this one."
