come along, little one, teach me to fly
follow the pretty bird across the sky
you swore that you were better than i could ever be
now prove it to me
or fall into the sea
let's see how great you can truly be
go on, fly, show the birds how
or else you'll drown
it's up to you now

how would you like it if someone who didn't know a mind from a soul
the back of their hand from your own
woke up and somehow seemed to know
everything you've spent your entire life in endless pursuit of

she handcrafted sentences that should've been mine
wrote stories that should've been mine
and it would've been fine
if i hadn't almost died
if i hadn't given all but the last cells of myself
devoted myself to the almost-successes
strived for the almost-victories
just for you to get a laurel instead of me

better be quick, or you'll fall the long way down
prove it to me, perdix
make your own wings now
