The Ghost of You

I looked at his pale face in the coffin. He had always been pale, but now he looked kinda....empty.

"He's in a better place, now." Mikey said as silent tears rolled down my face. He swallowed, trying to be strong.

I fought the urge to tell him that the best place Gerard can be was in my arms.

"Come here." Mikey said and gave me the hug that needed so bad.
I started crying even harder.

"I tried to help him." I choked out.

"I know." Mikey said and I felt his tears fall on my head.

"I did everything." I sobbed.

"You couldn't help him, Frank. He was already in too far."

"I could've saved him. I should've tried harder."

"You did what you could. You even made him go to therapy."

"He didn't wanna go."

"But it was for the best."

"He should still be alive."

"He should, but he's not. "

"I want him to be."

"Me, too."

He pulled away from me and reached in his front right pocket. "He told me to give you this." Mikey said and handed me a sheet of folded notebook paper.

"What is this?" I asked and shakily took the paper.

"I don't know. He said that if I read it, he'd come back from hell and kill me."

"Wait, you knew he was gonna kill himself?"

"No. A few months ago, he said if something happened to him to give you this."

I nodded and unfolded the paper to see the familiar messy scrawl: Gerard's handwriting.

Dear Frank,
Well, if you're reading this, I'm dead. I'm sorry, but I just can't go on anymore. I tried. I tried to stay sober. I tried to be happy. And I admit, I tried to love you. I'm sorry if I let you down, Frank. I can't lie forever...pretend that I'm okay when I'm not. But I want to thank you. Thank you for helping. Thank you for giving me love. And thank you for loving me. Promise me you won't beat yourself up about this and you won't forget about me.
