Junhui cursed softly under his breath as a gust of wind blowing through the cracked open window caused a sheet of paper containing patient information to glide its way across the table surface and land on the floor. Saturday mornings were meant for relaxation, as is the unspoken rule of all jobs across the world, but here he was anyway, holed up in his apartment on an otherwise lovely Spring day, all for some urgent work he had no excuse to delay any longer. He was currently reviewing the lab reports of a Pitbull terrier that had appetite issues and choosing the next best course of treatment, not nearly as much fun and games as meeting him personally, but this was unfortunately what he did sign up for.
He slid lower into his chair, readjusting the computer screen such that the sunlight doesn't reflect off of it and he can actually see what he's typing. There is a bird perched on the ledge somewhere near his apartment, chirping a beautiful sound that makes the atmosphere much warmer, livelier. For all he could admit, he was lonely, and craving the company of the person who'd entered his life those few months ago, and he enjoyed texting every day.
Why can't I stop thinking about him?
He knew why. Because truth be told, Minghao was the closest thing to a good friend he had. And he was afraid he might've ruined it all with that one stupid kiss. It was nice to converse with someone that was neither family nor a person that would easily drop him for something else. Minghao wasn't like that. Junhui would love to say he had a bunch of friends, but back in university, he merely focused on grades and outcomes, hardly approaching anyone else. He did have his roommate Joshua, who was the one comforting him the only time he'd ever allow himself to fail an exam in year 2, and although they've since gone their separate ways, they did meet up once in awhile. So, all he really did have was Huili, until of course Minghao came along.
Junhui forcefully shook his head, clearing all thoughts about him. There was work to be done, and he would not allow himself any distractions. Drawing a loud groan of frustration, he closed his computer screen, covering his eyes with his hands. Suddenly, the piercing sound of the doorbell reverberated around the empty apartment. His head snapped up, mind whirring. Strange, I didn't order delivery. With the chair scraping against the floor, Junhui pulled himself to open the door.
"Hi." Junhui teetered on the edge of shock when he pulled the door open, finding Minghao standing right in front of him. Minghao gazed into the apartment. "Can I come in?"
Wordlessly, Junhui allowed the younger to step into the apartment, rushing ahead of him to clear the mess he'd made on the table. "I wasn't expecting anyone today." He chuckled awkwardly, stacking up the papers strewn all across the surface. Minghao smiled, placing a plastic bag on the kitchen counter.
"I brought egg tarts." Minghao said. He left the box of treats unattended, walking back into the living room where Junhui looked at him in confusion. The older thanked him, going to place the egg tarts in the fridge, until he spotted Minghao eyeing it discreetly.
"Do you want one?" He asked. Much to his amusement, Minghao nodded his head, obviously happy that he was offered one and not having to go through the embarrassment of asking. Junhui walked into the kitchen, pulling out a tart for the each of them and placing them of a plate. Two plates in hand, he strolled back to the table, placing one gently in front of the younger, which he graciously accepted.
As the two of them ate in silence, Junhui spoke, "You didn't have to come all the way here for this."
Minghao looked up, scratching the back of his neck. "Well, I was kind of hoping we could hang out..." Junhui's mouth formed an o-shape.
"How come?" He didn't register the straightforwardness of his question until it came out.
The younger took a while to respond. "You're cool, and we're friends. Friends hang out for no reason, don't they?" He shrugged, trying to act nonchalant despite his heart beating against his chest.
