XIV. Forward

[chapter 14]

The car had broken down. Joel was looking into it as Ellie and i were sitting in the car.

Ellie looked absent, staring at her bitemark and tracing over it with delicate fingers.

"You okay?" I asked, voice full of concern.

She looked up at me. "Yeah. I'm okay." I nodded and sat back down.

Then Joel sighs heavily. "Well... looks like we're walking." I jump out of the car and Ellie does the same. "Should be a straight shot through here."

"Okay." I drone. "It's actually kinda pretty, ain't it?"

I nod and Ellie hums softly.

We walked to a spikey fence. Joel held it open for us. "Alright. Watch your head going through."

Then we hold it open for Joel. "Here. Got it."

"Feelin' my age now." Joel laughs as we start walking again. I snort. "You shoulda felt it a long time ago, old man."

"Shut up kid." He mutters.

He looks back at us for a moment. "I don't think i ever told you but uh... Sarah and i used to take hikes like this. I think... I think the three of you would've been... would've been good friends."

"I think you really would've liked her. I know she would've liked you." He smiles

I look down to the ground. "I bet we would've." Ellie says softly.

We jump up to higher ground and then head down to the other side. "Wow. Look down there."

There was, i assumed, Jackson. "It's amazing." I gasped.

"That it is." Joel says kindly.

He gets on a log and pushes himsefl onto higher ground. "Shit." The log falls down.

He then bends lower and holds his hand out for Ellie. "Here, i got you."

Then he hoists me up. We keep walking.

"Hey, wait." Ellie says and we turn around. She's fiddling nervously with her fingers. She groans annoyedly, not knowing how to start.

"Back in Boston. Back when i was bitten. I wasn't alone. My bestfriend was there. And she got bit too."

I frown. So much terrible shit has happened to Ellie.

"We didn't know what to do. So... she says, 'Let's just wait it out. Y'know, we can be all poetic and just lose our minds together.' "

Joel sighs sadly and crosses his arms.

"I'm still waiting for my turn."

"Ellie-" "Her name was Riley and she was the first to die. Then it was Tess and then Sam."

She had told me about both Tess and Sam. I wish i would've met them. Especially Tess, she sounds cool.

"None of that is on you." Joel reassures. "No, you don't understand."

"I struggled for a long time with survivin'. No matter what, you keep finding something to fight for. Now i know that's not what you wqnt to hear right now, but it's-"

"Swear to me. Swear to me that everything that you said about the Fireflies is true." She almost yells at us with tears in her eyes.

I look down and pick at my cuticles. I stay quiet.

"I swear." Joel says confidently.

"Okay."
