XVI. Birthday girl

Soon came Ellies 15th birthday.

We were in a forest waiting for Joel. He apparently had a surprise for Ellie. He did say that it was a early gift for me too, since i didn't know what it was either.

We were sitting on a rock, and Ellie was attempting to play the guitar.

I stared at her and smiled as she strummed gently.

Ellie hadn't changed much since we met. The delicate freckles on her face still bright as ever, her auburn hair still pretty much the same length.

Anytime it grew longer she asked me to cut it shorter right away.

Her voice though, had gotten slightly deeper.

"Fuck! I can't move my fingers like that!" She whined.

I laugh and shake my head. "It's fine. You'll learn. Like i did." I say smugly.

"Oh shut up. You're not that good." Ellie rolled her eyes playfully and smacks my arm.

She tried playing again. "That's starting to sound like something." Joels voice comes from ahead.

"Ugh, i suck." She moans.

"Nah. Just need to build up your calluses, that's all." He reassures. "Yeah."

"Alright kids, c'mon." He hurries. "This it?" Ellie excitedly stands up. "Yeah.

"Oh shit." and we start walking.

"I'm gonna start guessing." She informs us. I snort and shake my head at her impatient personality.

"You want to spoil your surprise now?" Joel draws out.

"I dunno... Is it... a dinosaur?" She says in a high pitched voice. "Stop trying to guess. I ain't telling ya." Joel says annoyedly. I dont know what it is either.

A dinosaur would be cool, but considering they went exist a lifetime ago, i wouldn't get myself too excited. There's only so much Joel can muster up.

"All right. Is it an elephant? Is it a convertible?"

"You're not gonna guess."

I laugh at them. "Is it a puppy? Is it a lotta kittens?"

"You mean a litter?" He says lowly. "What's a litter?"

"A bunch of kittens." Joel explains. "Hey Ellie, what if it's a mask that muffles your constant talking?" I grin.

She turns to me and laughs. "You have no place to talk!"

Joel groans from ahead of us. "There's one for both of ya."

I snicker and Ellie secretly shoots Joel with a finger gun.

He pushes a tree branch away from the way as we need to get through. "Mind your step." If we don't, we fall in the water.

"We got it." Ellie says and suddeny we're pushed into the water. "Oops."

We both ramble around in the water and then ascend back up. Gasping loudly we hear Joel laugh.

"What is wrong with you?" Ellie gasps. "You should see your faces right now." He laughs.

"What if i drowned? What if Lea hit her head and died?"

"Your fine. You gotta work on that confidence kiddo." He says calmly.

"Yeah keep laughing old man. See what happens." Ellie whispers and we start swimming.

"You're the worst!" Ellie yells at Joel.
