Shelter in the Storm

Part 26

Rosa was chatting with Kelly and Max in the lobby, her back turned to the door. When she turned around, she saw Lewis. As he noticed her distress, he instinctively raised his arms toward her.

"Lewis..." Rosa said, rushing to him with her suitcase in hand.

"Who hurt you, Rosie? I'll take care of them," Lewis said, gently brushing Rosa's hair.

"I just want to be with you right now... Deal with them later," Rosa said, burying her face in his chest.

Lewis's Perspective

I glanced at Kelly and Max, feeling both concerned and perplexed.

"Hey, I'm taking her for the rest of this weekend. She'll be safe, I promise," I said.

"I trust you with her more than leaving her by herself," Kelly replied.

That's when I realized I needed to find out what happened. I took her bag, wrapped my arm around her waist, and led her to my car. Helping her in, I stowed her bag in the back and settled into the driver's seat. She had already switched the music to Taylor Swift. I adored her, but these songs...

As I drove, Rosa began recounting everything she had heard from Carlos and Chico. I felt anger rising within me, but then it started pouring rain, and I could sense her fear. I spotted a rundown gas station and pulled over, turning to face her fully.

"Rosie, are you okay?" I asked, noticing her in thin, comfy clothes. I grabbed a blanket from the back and draped it over her, and she snuggled closer.

"Lewis, please don't lie to me or hide anything," Rosie said, moving even nearer and kissing me.

I loved it, but I knew I shouldn't. I couldn't.

"Rosie, no, you're upset," I protested, but she hopped over the center and sat on my lap.

"Fine, but you're warm, and I miss you. Falling asleep with you was the best sleep I've had in a long time," Rosie said.

"Okay, we'll stay here until the rain stops," I agreed, looking out the window, only to find her already asleep. She looked adorable while sleeping, especially with me. I missed this girl so much.
