Jennifer Halstead never really shut down when she lost someone, she just carried on with her life even as a child when she lost her mother or when she lost her dog Mint but loosing her best friend Abigail Grey was something that made her shut down, she stopped talking after she had called Meredith, she only spoke when it was absolutely essential when on a call while on shift, she stopped eating and barely drank enough water to keep her hydrated, sleeping was a whole different story too everything was just so hard for the redheaded firefighter and she was spiralling out of control.

It had been 2 weeks since Abigail had tragically lost her life in a serious fire in the heart of Chicago and the day of her funeral was fast approaching, Meredith was arriving and staying with Jennifer for the next week or so and if she was honest Jennifer was more than happy to have the company, it was getting harder to stay in the apartment which she shared with her best friend, it was hard to work in the same firehouse as her, everything was hard.

Jennifer didn't know what was going on with her own mind, she was struggling to even function like a proper human being, she was struggling to do anything and even responding to messages was hard, in fact she had only been responding to Meredith.

Meredith: About to board the plane. How you holding up
Jennifer: It's so hard Mer' so hard. I'll be at the airport to pick you up. I've got the next few shifts off for the funeral and stuff
Meredith: Are you talking to someone? You don't need to go through this alone
Jennifer: About that.....

Jennifer put her phone down on her bed and rolled onto her back, her eyes were bloodshot, tears once again streaming down her cheeks as she stared up at the ceiling Meredith was like a older sister to Jennifer, she had been since they met and sometimes they went dark and twisty together something that Abigail didn't really understand, she was always the one to be the most excitable, she showed her emotions more than Jennifer but that didn't mean. As Jennifer laid quitely crying their was a knock at the apartment door, she knew it would probably be one of her firehouse family members of her brothers coming to check on her, they had done that ever since Abigail had died.

"Please just go away" Jennifer thought to herself hoping they would think she wasn't home so they would leave, she couldn't face anyone right now. Everyone was staring to worry about the Young firefighter. It wasn't like her to stop talking to people and it worried her brothers the most.

"Come on Jeni' I know your in their. Please just come out, come talk to me. This isn't like you. Would Abby want you to lock yourself away" She heard her brother Will call, it was Jay yesterday morning.

"You don't know what Abby would want" Jennifer mumbled under her breath not moving from the spot she was on her bed.

"Just go away" Jennifer thought to herself as she grabbed the pillow and brought it over her head in order to block out her brothers calls. She didn't know why her brothers didn't just use the keys she had given them both, it was Abby's idea to give the two Halsteads a key, it was incase something happened to either of the friends, then they had someone to get them some clothes or stay with the other while one was in the hospital, it was a good idea, until now that Jennifer didn't want to see anyone. Jennifer rolled onto her stomach and kept her pillow over her head blocking out everything around her. Jennifer didn't hear the keys unlock the door to the apartment and the footsteps walking through the apartment. It wasn't until she felt the bed dip slightly that she realised her brother had let himself in and was now sat beside her
