"when i first met you, it was spring."

minghao stared at the flower bud, watching as a ladybug gently propped itself atop it, stretching and letting the sun embrace it.

a cold breeze flew past, minghao subconsciously tightening the bright red scarf around his neck, the movement scaring of the ladybug and sending it flying.

his eyes followed it until that little red dot vanished, minghao letting out a sigh and sitting himself back down on the grass.
he enjoyed quiet mornings, not having a single care in the world as his fingers lightly grazed the grass.

it was always quiet, the morning sun caressing his skin while the birds-

"give it back to me!" he looked up to see a group of boys gathered not so far away from him, with the littlest one trapped in the middle.

minghao looked away, forcing himself to tune his yells out since he had been told to never put his nose where it doesn't belong. after all, curiosity killed the cat didn't it?

he opened his bag and took out the lunchbox prepared for him along with a comic he had just started reading.

"...keep doing this?" he shook his head, trying his best to ignore the frustration in the other kid's voice. "please! just give it back!"

"or else what? you'll kick us with your lame leg?" minghao clicked his lunchbox shut, properly assessing the people before him. "just shut your mouth you stupid-"

a thud was heard, followed by his comic sliding down the back of the bully.

"pick on someone your own size," minghao said, dropping his lunchbox into his bag. "why you little-"

"what's going on here?" the commotion finally drew attention from the teachers, the bullies running away, leaving behind a broken walking cane and a boy sobbing on the ground.

tentatively, minghao approached him, kneeling on the ground in front of him. "we can go get a new one after school if you'd like?"

a moment of silence made minghao feel as though he had said something wrong. but, soon, the boy nodded, sniffling slightly as he did.

"what's your name?" the boy wiped his tears away and looked minghao straight in the eyes. "let's be friends."

the boy was taken aback by his offer, his eyes widening before he nodded again, extending his hand out for minghao to shake. "i'm jun," he said quietly.

"nice to meet you jun." minghao took his hand in his, the sun shining directly onto them like a spotlight. "i'm minghao." in that moment, it felt as though spring had truly begun.

"in the summer heat, we made memories together."

"xu minghao!" minghao looked up from his book, jun excitedly waddling over to where he sat as minghao took his bag off the seat to make space for him. "look at what i found!" jun waved a flyer in front of the younger's face, minghao slowly closing his book when he did.

"can we go?" minghao read the fine print and sighed, turning his head to face jun who was practically vibrating with excitement.
