Isaiah

Later that night I peek into Sarah's room. She and Isaiah are curled up in her bed, both fast asleep. I'm not sure why but my first thought is to take a picture of them there. My next thought is to get out of the room as fast as I can.

"Hi," I whisper, answering my phone.

"Hey," Justin's raspy voice greets me. "I started falling asleep but I wanted to make sure I talked to you tonight."

"Yeah, sorry," I hurry down the hall to my own bedroom. "My dad talked forever and then Sarah wanted to go get some things for Isaiah."

"So is he staying?" Justin sounds hopeful.

"Yeah, I guess he is," I sigh.

"Are you okay with that?" Justin asks.

"What choice do I have?" I ask him. "What was I supposed to say to my dad? No, I can't take care of my crazy ex-sister wife's baby while you put her through some kind of weird brainwashing program?"

"Okay, wow," Justin takes a deep breath. "Charlotte if you really don't want to do it," he pauses.

"No, I'm sorry, it's just been a long day," I change into my pajamas. "I'd rather have him here with me than trust him to total strangers."

"I would too, but if it's going to make you unhappy," Justin doesn't finish his sentence.

"I'll have to quit my job," I remember. "I hope Selena didn't do anything serious to get it for me, that only lasted a month."

"Alright, Charlotte, I get it," Justin snaps. "Can you just make it through a few more weeks so I have time to figure this out?"

"Wait, I didn't mean," I've never actually heard Justin talk to me like this before.

"No, you've made your point. You don't want him," Justin huffs. "You know what? Bring him to me."

"I'm going to take care of him, Justin," I protest.

"It's fine, I have plenty of help around here," Justin's not even listening to me. "I had a hamster, why not a baby? No one will even notice him. Twist can watch him, it'll be great."

"Justin, stop," I shake my head. "I was just thinking out loud, I didn't mean it."

"Really, it's totally okay. You know my fans love seeing me with babies," Justin goes on. "And I'll just explain to the media that I borrowed him. They'll love it. A 20 year old on tour with a baby. It's a great idea."

"You're right," I'm so done with his attitude right now. "And why don't you go pick up a few more wives while you're out? That sounds like a great idea too!"

"Charlotte!" Justin doesn't say anything else. I hear him take a slow deep breath.

"I'm sorry," I lower my voice. "It's been a really awful month and today has been pretty bad. I'm okay with having Isaiah, it's better that he's here where we all know he's healthy and safe."

"Thank you," Justin's voice is softer. "I'm sorry too, I didn't mean for all of this to happen and I feel like all I've done is apologize. It's just that I feel so trapped being on tour right now where I can't fix anything and it all keeps getting worse."

"I know, I don't mean to make you feel like that," I pull the covers back and tuck myself in bed. "We're doing okay most of the time, you know? Sarah and I are working things out and we'll figure out how to manage with the baby. You don't have to worry."

"I never stop," Justin gives a sad little laugh. "After seeing what happened to Hope and Rachel it's all I think about, Charlotte. I just keep having these nightmares that someone comes and takes you too."
