"Did you have trouble with the homework?" Riley asked Maya as she shut her locker.

"Piece of cake!" Maya grinned.

"You didn't do it didn't you?"

"I don't even know where my books are." Maya said with a chuckle.

"They're here." Riley said as she pulled out two books from her bag. "And they're heavy."

The bell rang and they both walked to their class.

"You have to do the homework, Maya!" Riley said as they walked in their next class. "This teacher is insane! A total nut job! I think there's something seriously wrong with him."

"Hi honey!" Cory, or as he prefers, Mr Matthews said as he sarcastically grinned. "You're late for your father's class."

"Oh don't worry Mr Matthews. You wrote her a note!" Maya said.

"I did?" Cory asked, confused.

"You did!" Riley and Maya said in unison as they passed the note to Cory.

"Riley's late. Deal with it." Cory read, with an impressed look in his face.

"You got my signature down pretty good this time." He remarked.

"Oh it was easy. You wrote like a girl." Maya shrugged. Cory gave an offended look.

Maya and Riley sat next to each other, like how they usually would. But this time, they brought their chairs closer together to annoy Mr Matthews. He chose to ignore it knowing they won't stop.

"History shows that bad things happen when you don't know who you are." Mr Matthews discussed.

The door opened and he whole class, including Riley and Maya, turned their heads to the door.

"Who are you I don't know who you are." Cory said.

Riley smiled and faced Maya. "Subway boy!"

Maya's heart started beating a bit faster. She knew he was going to study in their school but she didn't expect him to be in the same class.

"I'm Lucas Friar from Austin, Texas." Lucas said as he handed his late slip.

"Oh, new student, Mr. Friar?"

"Yes sir."

"Great. You're just in time for today's assignment." Cory said.

Lucas turned around and smiled at Maya.

Since Maya and Riley were sat too close to each other, Maya wasn't sure if the smile was for her.

Riley though, was pretty confident it was for her. She didn't know about what happened between Lucas and Maya last night. So she smiled back.

Lucas' smile faltered but none of the girl's noticed since Maya already faced front the moment Riley smiled back, and Riley's head was forced to face front by Mr. Matthews.

"I'd like you to write me a three paged essay on anything. Anything at all, that you guys believe on so strongly." He paused. "That you'd fight for it."

The class was silent for a while until Maya spoke.

"That." Mr. Matthews gave her a confused look. "I'd fight for no homework."

She continued.

"I come here everyday. Why won't you teach me everything I need to know while I'm here?"

"Wooh!" Riley cheered. Then she saw Cory's confused face. "Not wooh!"

Maya then started this whole protest that got the whole class to chant.

"No homework, more freedom." They repeatedly chanted.

It was the next day and Riley and Maya were sat on a table in the cafeteria.

Maya spotted Lucas. "Aw look at him lookin' for a place to fit in!"

"Do you think he'll sit with us?" Riley asked.

Maya scoots over for Lucas but Farkle slides in, which resulted to Lucas walking away.

"Ladies." Farkle said.

"Farkle." They replied in unison.

"Interesting lunch line dilemma. Sloppy Joe?" He looked at Maya. "Or Chicken Pot Pie?" He looked at Riley.

"Is that all you got?" Maya asked.

"That's it. Same time tomorrow!" Farkle said as he carried his tray and walked away.

Maya spots Lucas again and tells Riley to invite him to sit with them.

Riley was asking Maya what she could say to Lucas.

"Hey Lucas?"

"Like on the first name basis?" Riley asked, worried.

"Hey?" Maya suggested.

"Hey." Riley agreed.

"Hey back!" Lucas butted in and sat next to Riley.

He gave a quick glance to Maya before facing Riley.

They talked for a while, until Farkle showed up.

"Okay. Riley and Maya, I know I said I liked you both equally, but I gotta choose." Farkle started.

"Maya. I haven't like you that long but the moment I saw you, I knew you were the one. You make me feel dark and dangerous." Farkle said dramatically. "Riley, I've liked you since the first grade and I remember the time I ga- hey aren't you that guy I met in the cafeteria line?"

Lucas gave an amused smile. "Yeah. I helped you with what to get." He chuckled.

"Yeah and you got a sloppy joe. Surprising since everybody likes Chicken Pot Pie." Farkle said. "Usually I'm the only one who gets it."

"Yeah, well the sloppy joe deserves some love." Lucas joked. Maya couldn't help but look down and smile to herself. She wasn't sure if he knew about Farkle's metaphor, but that made her feel so much better about herself.

"I like this guy. We should keep him." Frakle announced.

Maya smiled at Lucas when he wasn't looking. But what she didn't know was that Lucas saw it, and smiled to himself.
