"Elizabeth, Alijah is here.", I hear Mama E yell from downstairs. I ran down the steps to see my cousin, Alijah. Alijah is my best friend, since she's only a month older than me, we were practically raised as twins. She is the one person I can talk to about anything and everything.
"Elizabeth!" Alijah screamed my name as I got to the bottom of the steps. I immediately jumped into her arms to hug her. "Oh my gosh! I missed you so much!", I respond with the same excitement.
"Y'all needs to shut up all that yelling in my house", Mama E said as she walked into the kitchen.
"Sorry, Mama E.", we said in sync. I grabbed Alijah's arm, basically dragging her up the stairs. "Dang, you almost ripped my arm off", Alijah said once we got into my room. "Sorry, I just couldn't wait to catch up.", I said, closing my door.
"Why didn't you just call me?"
"My phone broke. I gotta get a new one, and you know how Mama E is about her landline.", I explained.
"Why don't you get your white step-daddy to buy you another one? Maybe one of them new Motorola. He got the money, doesn't he?", She laughs.
"Yeah, I don't want to ask him for anything."
"Is he creepy or something?", Alijah asked
"No, nothing like that. He's trying to control my whole life and it's getting annoying.". I laid down on my bed and Alijah laid next to me. "It seems like any chance he gets, here comes his unwanted opinions and advice. On where I work or who I hang out with.", I complained.
"Who do you hang out with in this hillbilly town, anyway?" She questioned.
"Just Daryl"
Alijah sat up swiftly and loudly said, "A guy? You are hanging out with a guy, just the two of you?".
"Don't sound so surprised", I grinned.
"Sorry, but you never hung out with the opposite gender. I am surprised". Alijah laid back down after calming down.
"So is it strictly platonic or is it something more?"
"Wow, men and women can't be friends without being attracted to each other.", I deflected.
"You're evading the question, so it's obvious you like him."
"Yeah"
"Is he white?
"Yeah"
"Like mother, like daughter", Alijah jokes.
"Oh shut up", I said as I hit her with a pillow.
"Does he like you?"
"I'm gonna assume so, We kissed."
Alijah gasped so hard, you would think someone just got shot. "Dang, you ain't have to suck up all the white's air", I reacted.
"No, it's you sucking on the white man's air".
We burst out laughing and laughed hard to the point our stomachs started to hurt. A knock on my door broke us out of our laughing fit.
"Come in", I called out.
My mother's head poked around the door. "Are y'all ready to try on the dresses from the Greene's?"
"Yeah, let's go". We got up to leave for the dress shop.

I stood in the mirror, looking at myself in the bridesmaid's dress. " I look ridiculous", I whispered to myself. The dress was a bright yellow mess, with orange ruffles going from the top to the bottom. To make it worse it had these big puffy sleeves of the same safety orange as the ruffles.
