"Hail Mary, full of grace..."
The students of Holy Rosary Academy chanted their daily morning devotion.
Chidinma felt hot and sweaty though the cool morning breeze was nothing to write home about.
"Chi, wonder why principal didn't lead morning devotion today. She's not around which is really strange", Goldie said, tapping her.
"Well yeah you're right", she replied. Morning devotion had just been led by their school counselor, Miss Ayuba.
"Are you okay? You've been jumpy since morning and don't even try to tell me it's nothing", Goldie said, giving her a worried look.
"It's just a nightmare, it'll pass",she said, trying to convince herself.
Goldie was about to pressurize her into talking some more when Miss Ayuba tapped the microphone, drawing every student's attention.
"Dearest students I hate to inform you that our beloved principal has passed away".
Students gasped at the shocking news.
Chidinma frowned, her mind flashes back to her memory and she shudders.
"We have a new principal who is a relative of the old one. Miss Magaji will now address you",Miss Ayuba said as she gave the microphone to a woman who had been standing beside her.
"Good day students. It's unfortunate that my aunt has passed away but your academics must continue, thankfully the school will soon vacate leaving only the Js3 and Ss3 students for me to handle. Focus on your studies and upcoming exams, thank you", she said.
"Hei! I can't believe our principal is dead. That kind woman!", Goldie said to Chidinma as they walked back to class.
Chidinma took her seat near Goldie,then allowed herself to get drowned in the noisy class.
"Did you hear about what Emerald did?",Uyai, a girl who sat next to her said.
"Yes,yes I heard that she kissed Moses. The girl is so shameless", Goldie said. Her tone clearly showing her dislike for Emerald.
"But I thought Moses was dating her cousin,Aize",Deba who was sitting in front of her joined the conservation.
"She's nothing but a prostitute", Goldie said staring at a fuming Aize."Sha I can't wait for classes to end so that we'll watch drama".
"Chi, raise your head isn't that the boy you said you saw in your dreams once?", Goldie said causing her to raise her head up.
Chidinma's eyes were filled with bewilderment as she watched the same caramel skin coloured guy that she'd dreamt about talk to their maths teacher. She kinda had a thing for him. She pinched herself to be sure this wasn't a dream again...
Goldie looked at her and said,"His name is Naeto I think,Uyai said he started this school last year which is probably why we haven't been seeing much of him".
But Chidinma wasn't listening to her friend, she just stared at the door he'd pass through a few minutes ago.
"How was your night class? I hope you all slept well?", Mr Samaila said, snapping her out of her thoughts.
Different answers were said but Chidinma kept hers to herself. Her night had been awful.
"It's okay",he raised his hands up"I take control of my classes"
The noise reduced but wasn't completely gone then he turned to the white board and wrote MATHS. Then he turned to face the class again.
"Who can remind me of our last topic?"
Time ran quickly and maths class was over.
"My period is over. I still have a lot of topics to go over with you, which I will go over, during your extension",he said and left the class.
The class became a market square.
"I can't wait for extension", Goldie said, sighing dreamily.
"Why?", Chidinma asked.
"Think about it having the whole school to ourselves. Less teachers,less restrictions", Goldie said.
Chidinma didn't really care, honestly she wanted to finish secondary school quickly.
"You know you're a fine girl,bah",Mr Obidike said holding her hands. She gently pushed him and frowned.
"I came to call you for our Civic education class", she said. She'd come all the way from her block just to call him for classes. Berakah, her class captain had asked her for help because she was not feeling too well.
"Chi baby!",he laughed." Stop frowning I'm coming to class", he said.
She turned to see Naeto standing at the entrance with one of his hands in his pocket. She excused herself and walked pass him making sure not to brush shoulders with him.
