He knocked on the door, a grin plastered on his face. He pulled his cap further onto his head and made sure his buttons were all fastened. He knocked again, getting a little bit frustrated. A voice called out from inside the house,
"Who is it?" A woman asked from an open window.
"Maintenance, you were complaining about the water?" He called back, after some waiting he heard the 'pat pat' of someone running down some stairs. The door locks clicked and the door creaked open to reveal a middle-aged woman with curlers in her hair."Oh I'm so glad you're here, the shower isn't working and my husband is out for the weekend!" She said with a sigh of relief.
"Okay I'll get right on it, Mrs...." He hesitated
"Evans, Jacklynn Evans" she told him
"Ok Jacklynn, where's the problem?" He asked her, Jacklynn gestured for him to come inside. He obliged and closed the door, following her up the flight of stairs. She showed him to the bathroom, it was quite large with a claw footed bathtub and a stainless steel shower head. He took out his toolbox and unlocked the clasps. He opened the toolbox to reveal a variety of tools.
"Thank you so much for coming." She told him, smiling.
"It's no problem Mrs Evans, it's all part of the job really."
He took out a screwdriver, wrench and hammer along with some other tools and began work on the pipes.
After he had taken out some of the pipes and cleaned out what he could Jacklynn talked to him again,
"You know after you're finished, maybe you'd like a drink?"
"Thanks for the offer, this is thirsty work so I'll accept."
Mrs Evans smiled and pulled the loose strands of her hair over her ear. When he had finally finished the maintenance man put all the pipes back into their place, but he had one more thing to do.
"Mrs Evans!" He called
She came running into the bathroom.
"Thank you so much! I'll have my shower and then I'll make you a coffee afterwards." She told him as she took out her curlers.
"Sure, I'll leave you to it."
"Oh and Mr Maintenance man, feel free to come in, I'm not shy!" She winked at him
He laughed and opened the door to leave the bathroom. He waited for a few minutes for her to start her shower and become completely absorbed into it, soon she began to sing recent pop hits at the top of her lungs. He took his chance and opened the door. He took a small gas canister out of the box.
"Mr maintenance man, I know you're there and I'm ready for you!" Jacklynn called from the shower as she lathered shampoo into her hair. A disgusted look came onto his face as he took an elastic band and tied it to the canister's trigger, letting out the gas. Chlorine gas. He rolled it closer to the shower curtain before closing the door again.Soon he heard Mrs Evans begin to cough and retch from inside the room. He smiled and began to laugh, he waited for the coughing to stop and sure enough he heard a thump as the woman dropped to the floor. Donning a mask, he reentered the bathroom and picked up his gas canister, removing the elastic band and replacing it on his wrist. He then reached for his pocket and pulled out a knife.
"Let's put a smile on that face and let them all know what a little cheating rat you are!"
And he took the knife to her lips and cut into the woman's cheeks leaving her with a permanent smile. He then turned off the water and left the room for a final time. He headed down the stairs and out the door.
