THE WEATHER was amazing, the sun was casting its hot rays across the small rural town and those who lived there were buzzing with life. The clock striking 7:00am causing thousands of alarms around the town to sound and awaken the high school students, parents and children alike.

Rosita had already been up for quite some time, a glass of apple juice pressed to her lips as she gulped it down, her eyes never straying from the book that lingered in her other hand.

"Good morning, sweetheart." Elena, her mother greeted with a quick kiss to the forehead and a cheery smile.

The teenage girl swallowed and licked her lips clean before lowering the novel to the bench, slipping the tassel between the pages and slamming the book cover shut.

"Good morning, mama." The girl chirped brushing her hair over her shoulder.

"How was your run this morning? I think I heard you leave."

Rosita's eyes widened a fraction, "it was good, really needed to clear my head. I didn't mean to wake you up."

"It's okay, honey." Elena reassured filling her travel mug with way too much coffee than her body actually needs. "I didn't sleep much last night anyway."

"You too?" Rosita questioned, her cheery demeanor beginning to crack.

Elena glanced over, concern written all over her face.

"Honey." Her mother approached lowering a cautious hand on top of her daughters as she forced their eyes to meet.

"Do we need to refill your prescription?"

Rosita gulped nervously, she fucking hated that question. It made her feel weak.

"Mama, you know-"

"I only want what's best for you, mija." Elena spoke softly. "Your medication seemed to really work, it could help you sleep better, maybe you won't need to be up so early going on these runs to calm yourself down."

Rosita quickly shook her head, "you know what it did to Cat. I can't. It'll upset her when she realizes that I'm on it again."

"She doesn't have to know." The mother quips, raising a brow.

"You don't always have to protect your sister."

"She's sensitive, scared." The words fell quietly, cautious of any listening ears. "I don't want to freak her out, I'll be okay."

The teenage girl glanced down at her vibrating Apple Watch, a sigh parting her lips as she realized the time.

"I gotta run, mama." She leaned in pressing a kiss to her mother's cheek. "I had to be in the library like 5 minutes ago, I'm just getting some last minute studying in. Could you please take Cat to school?"
