Before Kellin Quinn even decided to ask his boyfriend to go home with him for Christmas, he played an entire movie reel in his head.
In it, the entire week played out like a Hallmark holiday special, full of romantic comedy-worthy moments with Vic, his family adoring him from the second they met him, spending the holidays doing their favorite festive activities, having hot cocoa and hanging decorations and kissing under mistletoes and taking all those aesthetically pleasing photos for Instagram... Even a proposal scene sneaked up in there, but that's how he knew he was getting too carried away.
He saw it all though, and he loved every single second of it. He wanted an absolutely immaculate Christmas and he was going to get it.
Vic said yes with a big smile when he asked. His timing was perfect too, after a sweet date that ended up with them on the floor of Vic's living room. Nothing new. And while still hanging off that blissful wave they got every time they had sex, Kellin dropped the question. Vic wasn't even intimidated by meeting his entire family. It had been a year, he was more than ready.
"I'm good with parents," he'd said then, making Kellin snort and hide his face in his sweaty neck.
"Please don't talk about my parents right now," he laughed.
A couple of weeks later, Kellin Quinn returned to his childhood home. With his boyfriend and their dog and the hope that this Christmas was going to be the best one of his adult life.
Sweet, sweet Kellin didn't know to be careful of what he wished for.
The traffic accident that delayed their drive to the house by three hours should've been the first sign, the first bad omen that perhaps his dreams of a perfect Christmas wouldn't come true, but Kellin wasn't the type to read much into the signs of the universe and all that stuff. So he played it off like a small mishap.
The long–even longer now–drive was more bearable with Vic cracking jokes the entire time singing along to bad karaoke songs to their beagle Sam, and eating the unhealthiest of snacks they got at gas stations along the way.
