TREECH LOOKED AT HER expectantly, waiting for an answer.

"How much of that did you hear?"

"Enough."

Evie tried to gather her thoughts, "Look, I—"

"Star crossed lovers? That's how they see us?" Treech seemed defensive, and Evie wanted to reassure him.

"It's not real." She laughed slightly, trying to ease the tension, though that seemed unlikely, "I mean, it's a television show! They just want to see-"

"Not real?"

If it was possible, Treech almost looked more upset now.

"No," his face fell completely at her answer, the heartbreak evident in his eyes, "It's just, you know—"

"You lied." He wouldn't even meet her gaze now, head dropping to look at the floor between them.

"What?"

Well that was an abrupt change from before the talent show. She knew might be upset about the love story fiasco, but she never thought he was be this upset.

Evangeline was so used to the Treech who joked with her, teased her, maybe even playfully flirted with her from time to time. But now, gone was his humor and present was his anger.

"You said you cared. You said you just wanted to help me and I actually believed you..." he trailed off, "But it was all about the Plinth Prize!"

"Treech—"

"I heard about it at the zoo, Lucy Gray was talking about it. But I thought you were different. Not like the other capitol kids," Evie couldn't catch up with how fast this was unraveling before her, trying to take in everything he was saying to formulate her response.

But he had more to say, looking up into her eyes, "And I heard you with that woman just now. What were the rules again? The mentor whose tribute wins gets the prize, and the money, right?"

He'd been paying attention all along.

"You used me." He hissed.

Oh no. He knew everything, everything she hadn't told him. But he had it all wrong.

"I don't care about the money. I care about you. All of this has been to help you." Evie tried to explain before he got more upset with her, but it was too late.

He was practically falling apart at the seams, right here in front of her.

"You just needed me to help you win. None of it was real. You played me." He pointed a finger at her. He wasn't listening at all, he was letting his own thoughts spiral out of control.

Evie wasn't sure what to say. This wasn't how she thought it would play out. In a perfect word, she would've had more time to prepare herself, to know exactly what to say.
