BEFORE EVIE COULD GATHER her thoughts on the events that had just occurred, Coryo was at her side, hand grasping her arm.
"We had a deal." He whispered in her ear.
"And he's keeping up our end of that deal." Evie whispered back.
"Is he?" Coryo cocked an eyebrow at her words, "I let it go when he went after her during the bloodbath, but now he's just cornered her with Coral and the rest of her pack. They're hunting her, Evie."
"And he let her go." Evie responded with a pointed look, "He can't just blatantly go against his alliance or they would kill him. You saw what Coral did to Tanner."
She took a deep breath to calm herself. Getting defensive wouldn't help.
"Treech knocked the drone into Coral and gave Lucy Gray the chance to escape. And she was able to run and hide because of him."
Coryo didn't seem content with that explanation.
"He's doing the best he can to help her in there, got it?" Evie's word was final. She knew Treech was doing everything he could given the circumstances.
The two turned back to the screen as someone else emerged from hiding.
"And who do we have here?" Lucky asked rhetorically, seeing as everytime could see who had came out of the rubble, "Ah, it's ill Dill, tuberculosis on legs."
They watched as the weak girl began walking sluggishly in the direction of the discarded water bottle. She dropped to her knees before it, unscrewing the top, and taking a few sips of the liquid inside.
She stopped after a moment, coughing and setting the glass bottle back down before slowly lying down on her side. Her coughs getting weaker by the second.
Evie spared a glance to Coryo, who had closed his eyes, an unreadable look on his face.
Suddenly the coughing stopped.
"Dill? Dill." Reaper followed after the girl, finding her lying on the ground.
"Dill, wake up." He jogged over, stopping to kneel behind her.
"Dill? What happened?" He whispered before he saw her face. Her eyes open and unblinking, staring into nothing. She had a single blood trail flowing from her nose.
Reaper began to shake her shoulders, "Dill? Dill. Dill! Hey, Dill. Dill, wake up!"
No response.
"Dill! Dill!" He called her name, holding she could come to but she never did.
Reaper let out a heart clenching yell. A cry of anguish and anger.
Coryo had begun to make his away back to his seat, leaving Evie's side as she watched the scene with heartbreak in her eyes. Another young life stolen by the copitol.
