Look, I didn't want to be a hero, much less know that was the trajectory my life was turning to.
I mean, the day it all began had started out more or less normally.
Which should have been my first clue things would go absolutely insane at the end of it.
I just had no idea how much my life would be turned upside down—at least, more than it usually had been for me. Which, in hindsight, shouldn't have even be much of a surprise. Insane, unexplainable, dangerous stuff always happened around me, but I guess what was going to happen would have just been too crazy for me to process, or that I would have scoffed in disbelief and said I've been reading too much of the myths my mom and I loved. That was, if I didn't see it literally happening in front of my eyes and it didn't explain nearly all of the strange stuff that has followed me since I've been born, and even more since I realised I was cursed..
Though, if I'd known the answers for my curse came with a side-heaping of danger, near deaths, and even more loss than I've already weathered and thought I would be unable to take any more, then maybe I might have never chosen to go on that bus on that fated day.
But I'm getting ahead of myself, even though I thought I should give you bit of a warning before you head into how messed up and crazy my life has become—I mean, even more than it already has. Just in case it, you know, happens to you as well. When it comes to people like me, you never know. Not truly. And in most cases you don't find out until you almost die—and only if you don't get to safety in time, where that "almost" death is most definitely a guaranteed death.
You just hope they don't find you before it's too late and you can get to said safety in time.
Still here? Huh. Maybe you aren't one of us. Or you have a death wish—and trust me, I know a thing or two about death.
My name is Hester Sāto. And my life only got more stranger—and deadlier—since that day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where I was an accomplice to my teacher's murder...
