Hester Sāto is cursed.

Looking at her, you might not know it—dressed in sweaters and faded jeans and her mom's old sherpa-lined denim jacket, nose always stuck in some Shakespearian play or mythology and classics book that she loves with her heart and soul, and a kindness about her, Hester seems like the last person to be cursed.

But she is cursed. She's been cursed since the day she was born, when she first opened her eyes and instead of eyes of dark brown like her mother, eyes of luminous gold were revealed to the world.

That was only the first sign of her being cursed, and it only grew stronger. Ever since she was a toddler, Hester has seen strange and unusual things, creatures and things that seem like something from the yokai stories her mom told her or she'd see in the big mythology books her mom spent her whole life studying, that her mom tried to assure her weren't really there and yet she looked nervous when Hester talked about the creatures she thought she saw—which was an odd expression, for her mother was a kind, gentle soul, who smiled at people and would help strangers and feed stray animals in a heartbeat and tended her garden with love and care, who showed Hester how to care for an injured bird and then let it go free when it was strong and healthy, that she knitted scarves and sweaters and hats and gloves not only for them but to also give them to the homeless shelter where they lived and made homemade mugs for both tea and hot chocolate, as her mother always drank tea never coffee, and wove stories from both their culture and the myths from all across the world as childhood stories retold anew to Hester's endless wonder and let her know that all things deserved love, life and kindness no matter what, if they were willing to accept it themselves. That there is always good in the world, and they should always try to be good and kind themselves.
