It was the next day's evening. Yoshimura gave me, and the Fueguchis time to pack our things and leave. The longer we stayed with the others, the more of a target we painted on them. Touka had practically glued herself to my side, savouring every single moment no matter how small it was. Even when I left her, it was a long goodbye. Kanei and all the other workers had to pry Touka off me and drag her back in. She nearly used her kagune just to fight back and get back to me.

Thankfully, it didn't escalate that far and now I was with Ryouko and her daughter, Hinami. We had just entered the 24th Ward and... It wasn't exactly the most pleasant of places. Graffiti was scribbled poorly everywhere, a decaying and rotten smell lingered in the air and I'm pretty sure I saw old and dried up blood marks on the walls of buildings. Sometimes I wondered why the heroes were never sent in to clear out the Ghouls. Surely they had the numbers and the manpower to do so, right?

A cold shiver ran down my spine as I walked.

Ryouko: Mutasim. You didn't have to come with us.

Mutasim: I did. The Investigators would target me if I stuck around. I didn't really make an effort to conceal my face.

Ryouko: I'm sorry. This is my fault.

Mutasim: You've got nothing to be sorry about. Nobody could've known what was going to happen. If we found ourselves in the same situation, I wouldn't change a thing.

The mother smiled softly and nodded.

Ryouko: I really wish all humans were like you, Mutasim.

Mutasim: How's Hinami holding up?

Hinami: I'm okay... But... How will we get food?

Ryouko: Let's not worry about that right now dear. We'll find somewhere to stay first.

She stroked her daughter's head, comforting her. Night was starting to descend which worried me. The 24th Ward was known for being a popular nest for Ghouls and night was the perfect time for them to start hunting. They'd probably smell me and rush me like moths to a flame. Just the thought of them tearing me apart made my heart pound frantically with fear.
