I pulled into my dads driveway and got out of the car, wiping away the tears that were still running down my face. I calmed down a lot from earlier.
I stepped onto porch and stood in front of the door, taking deep breathes and calming myself down. I was always my dad's strong girl so I didn't want to seem weak, not even now.
I wiped my tear-stained face and walked into the house. I went into the kitchen, following the sound of my dad cutting some type of food and music blaring.
"Hey," I said as I sat on the stool on the other side of the kitchen island. My dad stood on the other side; cutting some strawberries.
"Hey, sweetheart. How'd it go?" He said as he continued to cut the fruit and put them in a bowl.
"Um-uh... It's now on the list named: Worst Days Of My Life."
He raised an eyebrow. "You have a list?"
"Dad!" I said as I playfully punched his arm. "Please, take this seriously."
"Take what seriously?" He said.
"Mom died." I said with a crack in my voice.
"Oh, I'm sorry baby." He said, acting like nothing even happened,
"I don't get it. How are you doing this?!"
"Doing what?"
"Acting like nothing even happened! Your wife died!"
"Ex wife!" He corrected.
"She was still a part of your life! She did give birth to me you know!"
"Mary, please quit."
"No! My mom is dead! Dad! I just don't understand you sometimes."
"Okay! Can we both stop?! Here," he said as he handed me the bowl of assorted fruit. "Eat."
I grabbed the bowl and started walking away.
"Where are you going?" He asked.
"To my room."
"Now come on! Mary! I'm sorry, okay?!" He called up as I continued to walk up the stairs to my room.
I entered the room and sat on my bed, I ate my fruit until I lost my appetite. I put my legs up so they were almost touching my torso, I put my arms on my knees an rested my head on top of them.
I looked out the window until I noticed the stars. And my first thought was: Mommy.
I slowly made my way to the window and put my hand on it as if I was reaching for her. I slightly look down until I saw the roof under my window. The thought of me and my mom came to mind.
*Flashback*
"Look at the stars, Mary." My mom said pointing to the sky.
We sat on the roof of my dad's house. She had to sneak here at 2:30 in the morning just to see me. We decided to look at the stars.
"Hey," I responded. "Isn't that the big dipper?" I pointed to a group of stars.
"Yeah, and over there is the Little Dipper." She said as she pointed to another direction.
"Mar? Are you awake?!" We heard my dad yell from inside the house.
"Oh, Mar Bear." My mom said. "Got to go." She quickly hugged me then climbed off the roof onto the ground. To be honest I don't know how she does it. I watched as she drove away right before my dad approached the window.
"Hello?" My dad says as he knocks on the window.
"Hey," I said as I continued to look at the stars.
"Whatcha doing?" He says.
"Just looking at the stars."
"Okay, well, can you come inside now?" He asks.
"Yeah, sure."
I went inside and went to bed.
*Present*
I opened the window and climbed onto the roof. I stared at the stars admiring the constellations.
I heard the door open from inside my room.
"Mar? Mar?" I heard my dad say as he looked for me.
He went to my window and opened it so he could speak to me.
"Mar, what are you doing?"
"Looking at the stars, I always do this. You know that."
"Yeah, well, please come back inside before eleven, okay?"
I looked at my phone and saw that it was fifteen to ten.
"Alright." I said back.
"Okay, goodnight." He said.
"Yep, night."
He left and I continued to look into the night sky.
"Mom?" I practically whispered.
"I miss you already... I'm looking at the stars... And thinking of you..."
A tear slowly made its way down my cheek. But after one tear I just let it out. I cried into my knees and just kept replaying memories of my mom in my head. Until my thoughts got interrupted.
"Ain't no way we're going home!" A man who looked like he was in his twenties yelled as he oddly ran down the street in front of my house. His blond hair flapping in front of his face.
"Riker! People are sleeping!" A woman yelled as she sped walked towards him.
"I think he had too much to drink, darn Rum." A man with shoulder-length, brown hair said.
Three more men followed behind, two actually looked my age.
Before they could see me I quickly opened my window and got inside my room. I turned off the light and got in my bed getting out my phone and posting a picture of my mom on Instagram.
"R. I. P. Mommy, I love you, I would give anything to look at the stars with you one more time. ✨"
I didn't care if I had any likes on it or not, I just wanted to put it out there that I am going through something tragic and don't want people to mess with me, because I will freak the freak out.
I put my phone on the charger and went to sleep.
What a day...
