It had been a long day, an emotionally devastating day. Lance stood in front of his front door. His stomach was rumbling, but he barely felt the hunger. His mind was focused on the pain he could feel there.
You aren't really born an alpha or omega in the beginning. Everyone starts their lives as a beta. On their 18th birthday, sometimes 19th if you're a late bloomer, you are supposed to check your status. You will know it's the time because a mark of change will appear on your body. In any place. It will signal that it's time to check your secondary gender. After a few weeks, the marks will disappear.
Lance had seen his one day after his birthday last week. He had been so happy to see it appear. It was a sign that he would soon not be a kid anymore. That older people would respect him because he was part of the adolescents that knew their secondary gender. He would be able to go into clubs or buildings that only those who had taken the test could enter. And most importantly of all, he could start learning how to drive. He sighed as he picked up his keys to unlock the door, giving a last glance at the simple yard in front of the house. It was rather small but served as a nice introduction to their home.
He really didn't want to go inside; he knew as soon as he took a step inside that he would have to lie. That he would have to pretend everything was fine.
The door swung open, and shortly after, even before he had been able to take a step into his home, a woman came out of the corner. Her arms wrapping around his neck and forcing him into a warm embrace. "Where the hell have you been? Estaba tan preocupada." (I was so worried.) He hears the familiar, almost soothing voice of his mother giving him the warmth that almost made him burst into tears. He had to hold them in because if he cried, then he wouldn't be able to lie anymore.
Lance wasn't even able to explain himself before his dad appeared together with his older siblings. His dad gave him disappointed eyes, mixed with anger. "Where the hell have you been?" He almost roared when their eyes met, followed by his worried siblings' questions. It all started to feel like an interrogation, and Lance just wanted to run away. He didn't know if the instincts still dormant in his body were waking up or the realization that he was the weakest in his family had anything to do with the feeling of wanting to run.
"Let him speak," his mother suddenly voiced, calming all the other alphas with her glare, also letting go of her son at the same time. Taking a step back so she could take a good look at her son.
Lance held his head down, holding back trembles. "I'm sorry..." He started, trying to find the words. His hand went down his backpack, and a sweaty hand rumbled around for the paper the Dr. has given him. The certificate that he was a beta. It was real to the extent that everyone not working with the law or health would accept it as true. An officer checking his background would imminently find out about his omega status. Just as if anyone googled him, it would say he was a beta.
As he found it, he took a quick glance at it to insure himself that it was the right paper. He had gotten two after all. The false and the true papers. He let his mom take it as he still held his eyes peeled on the floor.
"I had trouble accepting the result, and after the test, I got an allergic reaction to something used during the examination. As a result, I had to stay for a check-up which took ages. I was too out of it to really remember or listen to what the Dr. told me, but the rash I got was taken care of...my phone also died, and I felt too embarrassed to get home...but the longer I stayed out, the harder it was to get in. I think I stood at least an hour just waiting across the street," he rambled, trying to stay as close to the truth as he could. Feeling even worse in his stomach. He debated if he should just run upstairs to his room, wondering if he could be excused if he ran past them, saying sorry.
He didn't hear anything from anyone for a while and dared to raise his head slowly. Having debated that he wouldn't be able to run past them and that it probably would put him in more trouble. He met the eyes he had been scared of. It was eyes that showed more than just disappointment. It was eyes filled with disbelief, like it was a bad joke. His dad's eyes looked the worst. He seemed to have eyes that were questioning if the beta boy was even his son. "Well, this can't be true," his mom said looking at Lance with disbelief so apparent that it hurt. "Are you making some kind of sick joke?" His dad chipped in, glaring at him, not being amused in the slightest. "Of course, it's a joke," Marco said, faking laughter. "How can you be a beta? We are twins for god's sake, tell her the truth Lance," Rachel's voice glaring at him too, also thinking it was all a joke.
Luis gave him questioning glances like he didn't know what to say. Veronica, on the other hand, didn't look at him. She looked with cold eyes at the wall in the corridor, her arms crossed. Why wasn't she looking at him? Was she embarrassed?
"It's no joke... I'm not an alpha...I am just an ordinary person." He practically yelled, shutting them all down. Lance could feel the glaring eyes all over him. Eyes that made him want to run. His stomach felt like it was wrapping around itself, and the sense of wanting to puke was nearing his throat. He cleared his voice and swallowed all to get the sense of nausea to go down.
"I will just go to bed now." he then said in a meek voice, walking past them. Holding his eyes glued to the floor. As soon as he got to the stairs, he heard his mom. "But aren't you hungry? Have you even eaten anything?" Her voice was filled with worry.
Lance just shook his head and ran up the stairs, and soon after a bang could be heard as he closed his door. Even on the second floor, he could hear their heated discussion. While he pushed his head into his soft pillow, trying to drown his rising heartbeats. "Damit...damit," he whispered. As he thought about what would have happened if he had told them the truth?
Feeling like crap, he rolled over and checked his phone.
