Cowardice is Key

Of course you'd meet a serial killer, that was just so typical of you. And not only did you meet a serial killer, no, you were sharing secrets with him. Sharing murders.

The sight of the body made you want to throw up, you could still smell the rotting flesh, still see the mangled face, still feel your burning terror. You felt William's hands on your neck still, his touch engraved in your skin.

After experiencing all of that, you wanted to leave, call the police or just do something to help. You knew that you couldn't do that, however, it was too risky. He was a god damn serial killer, if you did something that even vaguely suggested that you were going to jump ship or rat him out, he'd probably kill you and bury your body in a dumpster near where the crackheads yelled at people walking past.

You didn't want to see him so you did the only thing you could think of doing to manage to completely avoid seeing him for the rest of your shift. You had managed to squeeze yourself up into the SkyTubes that sat above the arcade area. You knew that if security watched back the footage, they'd see the humiliating display of you frantically climbing up a slide and falling back down several times before finally managing to get yourself to the top and into the tubing system.

You sat in the cramped tubing system, every so often crawling forward on your hands and knees to look out of the slightly yellowing plastic glass and peek out over the restaurant, looking for any sight of him.

Your shift was coming to a close, just a few more minutes and you would skip out of here and run far away. You were going to get out. You were already constructing an incredibly unrealistic plan in your head. You brought your knees close to you and rested your head on them as you thought through your stupid ass plan.

You'd leave after work and get home quickly. You pack up any valuable items you had, which would be easy as you hardly had anything of value. Then, you'd walk until you got to the highway and then you'd hitchhike as far away as you could, forgetting this to be just a big nightmare.

It was a simple plan, something that you hadn't thought through closely. You were completely broke and you'd killed someone, that was something that wasn't just going to go away. Yet, you were desperate.

You looked down at your watch, the time reading seven o'clock. Finally, you could get out of this shithole. You awkwardly crawled through the crowded tubes before immaturely hurling yourself down the slide, landing awkwardly on your ass at the bottom. You jumped up onto your feet and began to quickly walk to the break room to grab your stuff.

'Just avoid William' You thought to yourself, always easier said than done. William had a habit of popping up when you least wanted to see him, it was if he could sense your dread.

You rushed into the break room, which was thankfully empty and you grabbed your bag from the locker. As you clumsily grabbed ahold of it, you heard something fall from it, clanging against the floor. You quickly crouched down and picked up what had dropped. The lighter.

You picked up the lighter, your desperation to leave faded slightly as you looked at it. A strange feeling of warmth spread across you as you felt the silver against your fingers. You hadn't appreciated it at the time but the lighter, that gift, had been... thoughtful. The money he had got back for you from your coworkers had been... kind.

You hated him, you hated what he did. So why did this moment feel hard? Why did you want to at least say goodbye?

You frowned as you shoved the lighter into your bag and pushed those strange emotions of longing to the back of your mind. You knew what he did. He didn't care, you doubted that he even had the ability to care. He was cruel and cold and that's all he could be. So why did you want to believe differently? Why did you even bother to entertain that idea?
It was time for you to leave.
