The walk to wherever he was taking you was awkward to say the least. The deserted streets that led into the 'shopping area' of Hurricane were depressing, the store fronts were lifeless and grey as though they reflected deep rooted grief. There were hardly any lights and even the street lamps only managed to flicker out a small pitiful ray, which left you blindly following William, an option that was the least likely to get you home alive.
'He could totally murder me if he wanted to.'
It was a morbid thought but you were beginning to think that this might be a set up, the silence between you two had given you time to think. He had called you up at 1AM to help him behind Freddy's all alone and was now leading you through dimly lit streets for 'food.' Your critical thinking must have been switched off when you agreed to this bullshit. Of course you would end up dying because you couldn't mind your business, you were too curious for your own good. It killed you to agree to go with him but the desperation to further speak to him and learn more about why he was so 'crazy' took over your usual kind of rational mind.
William had hardly looked at you during the walk, he only briefly looked over his shoulder from time to time to check that you were still following. In a desperate attempt to break the silence you cleared your throat awkwardly before beginning whatever ramble you were going to come out with.
"So... where exactly are we going again?" You picked up your pace a little to catch up with him.
He didn't turn around as he replied nonchalantly, "You'll like it, trust me."
His vagueness puts you on edge. However, another part of you was somewhat excited. Now you didn't want to consider yourself a 'materialist' but after receiving the obviously expensive lighter from him, you somewhat expected him to be leading you towards some fancy restaurant where they serve caviar or cashmere or whatever they call it. Fish eggs basically. You placed your hand in your pocket, briefly grazing the edge of your new lighter as you did so. The nights were beginning to get cold as Fall made an appearance, leaving Summer behind.
"Uh, how much further is it?" You were beginning to feel the cold as the walk went on and on.
"Just around the corner." He had said that three times before, half of you was convinced that he was actually lost but refused to admit it.
He dipped around a corner as you followed him, half expecting a fancy restaurant and half expecting to be met with a chainsaw.
You got neither.
In front of you lay the raw and cold light of a 24 hour McDonald's. You definitely weren't getting any caviar tonight.
You turned to look at William in confusion as he stared down at you expectantly."You took me to a McDonald's?" You didn't want to be ungrateful or anything but you'd just trekked through the isolated and pitch black streets with a man who had previously tackled you and bullied you...for a McDonald's.
"It's the only place that's open past midnight, besides where were you expecting me to take you?" He asked dryly.
You didn't want to piss him off by answering with something dumb so you kept silent.
You looked away and back at McDonald's before shrugging casually. Well there goes your dreams of eating an expensive lobster and fish eggs.
But, a free meal is a free meal.
"No, it's great." You put on a forced smile, at this point you just wanted to find out his deal and go back to bed.
"Great." He replied before suddenly grabbing your arm and pulling you towards the entrance as though you'd suddenly lost the ability to walk.
