Coming down the stairs, she spotted Giyuu on a sofa. He still looked pretty battered, with small cuts on his cheeks and a torn uniform... but he was alive. "Giyuuu!" Miri shouted excitedly and jumped on the couch next to him to give him a tight hug. "Heyy," he pulled her away to look at her, "are you okay?" he asked a little concerned. His eyes searched her face for any injuries.
She nodded, smiling, and flung her arms around his neck again. As she breathed in his unmistakable fresh scent and closed her eyes, all her doubts about the deal with Douma disappeared. It had been the right decision. His arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer into the embrace.
"How long have you been awake, why didn't you tell me?" she murmured into his shoulder.
"Yes Gilo, why didn't you tell her? Seemed busy?" a smug voice came from behind. Miri sat up again to see Douma leaning against the doorframe. Giyuu's mood immediately darkened and he stared at Douma through narrowed eyes. When Miri realized what he referred to, she started to blush. Giyuu must have heard everything. Embarrassed, she gave Douma an accusing look, but he just smirked and winked at her.
God, how could he be such an arrogant asshole. After shocking her with those three magic words in the shower, he just acted like nothing had happened. By now, she wasn't even sure if he had really said them or if she had imagined the whole thing. After all, his mood swings were so unpredictable...
Giyuu's grip on her waist tightened possessively, not unnoticed by Douma who clenched his jaw slightly. "You need to eat something," she remarks, turning her attention back to Giyuu, deciding to ignore Douma. Giyuu still glares at Douma stoically as if they were in some kind of staring contest. What has she gotten herself into?
Miri palms his cheeks and gently turns his head towards her. Finally, he breaks eye contact, "It's okay, I don't need anything." He speaks quietly. "Are you sure?" she insists, carefully stroking the cuts on his face.
The next second, the sofa tips over backwards, sending them both flying to the floor between the pillows. "Ouchh!" she squeaks in surprise and rubs her bottom. Confused, she looks over at Giyuu as she climbs back up onto the sofa.
"Whops, my bad," Douma grins and makes the remains of his ice manipulation disappear. Miri sighs in frustration. What was wrong with both of them? "I don't care if you're fine Gigu, but for God's sake go and get Miri something to eat. Look at her, she must be starving after saving your fat ass." He huffs and turns away.
-------------------------------------
Of course, Douma didn't have any "human eatables", as he liked to call them, so Miri and Giyuu had decided to head down to the village. Although it was bright daylight, Douma was okay with that. She assumed it was because most of his followers lived in the village and would keep an eye on them anyway.
It was only a twenty-minute walk until they were wandering through small streets full of market booths and vendors. Funny, she thought, how the village seemed so normal from the outside...
"Do you know what you want to eat now?" Giyuu asked from the side and Miri smiled. "Of course, I just wanted to see the other streets...but my mind is completely set on pizza," she replied. "Well then, let's get you some pizza," he saluted and directed her around the next corner to a pizza place.
Miri waited on the other side of the street and watched Giyuu trying to get the food. From here, it looked like he was arguing with the vendor about the price or the toppings or something. At this point, the vendor was crossing his arms and yelling something at him, which made her giggle slightly. She would never have thought that the powerful and unwavering Giyuu could be upset by a pizza man.
Finally, the man handed over the pizzas and Giyuu returned with a triumphant smile. "Here you go," he said and handed over one. "Thank you! What was all that trouble back there?" she asked him as they walked through the streets again. Giyuu sighed, "Nothing important, really... It's just that I've been on edge ever since yesterday, you know..." he looked down and stuffed a piece of pizza into his mouth.
"I can't stand him! That stupid demon," he adds. They sit down in front of a small fountain. "I know, he can get under your skin so easily..." Miri remembers with an understanding tone. You always had to expect the worst when spending time with Douma, because you never knew which sneaky comment or stupid action would catch you off guard again. It made things interesting somehow...
"And you owe him now...because of me," he says, running his hands through his hair as he looks down. "Hey," she pats him on the shoulder, "it was my decision, not yours..." Miri tries to calm him down. It hurts to see him like this. She never wanted to do this to him, she wanted to save him... .
"Do you like him? Douma?" Giyuu suddenly asks, turning to her with ruffled hair. Thrown back by this question, she ponders. When Douma had expressed his love for her, she had felt butterflies all over her body and her heart had warmed. Every time she was close to him, it felt so exciting...yet also extremely frustrating. But surely it wasn't...love...right? "I don't know... I guess a little?" she confessed, embarrassed. How could this happen? She was supposed to hate him!
"I see," Giyuu nods, considering his answer. For a few seconds it looks like he is fighting an internal battle. "You should know that I like you, Miri, more than just friends..." He takes her hand in his and looks at her with an intense gaze, "And I won't leave you alone with him... I'll fight for you if necessary," he admits. Miri's mouth falls open. She thought he would yell at her, push her away or just disappear... but this? Tears of relief and happiness form in her eyes.
"G-Giyuu, I like you too... hell, I don't even know what..." - "Hey, YOU!" Miri is interrupted by someone shouting from a few meters away. Coming closer, she recognizes a small woman stomping in her direction. It is Nora, the servant she met when she first woke up in Douma's temple. Miri stands and waves at her, a little unsure of herself. "Hey, I know you!" she replies. What is going on?
Nora reaches her and Miri notices her angry expression. As she is about to say something, a sharp pain explodes in her stomach. It happened so fast. "You... you tried to kill him," Nora hisses, her voice laced with hatred and jealousy. "Our leader only had eyes for you and you tried to kill him," she shakes her head and pushes Miri backwards where she stumbles to the ground. She presses a hand to her stomach and sees blood covering her clothes. Nora had stabbed her!
A feeling of sickness rolls over Miri at the sight of her blood leaving her body. "Miri, can you hear me? Miri, stay awake!" Giyuu's head appears above her with a panicked expression. She wants to say something back, but in the next second her eyes close and her mind goes dark.
