L was sitting at his computer, reviewing the recent videos the Task Force had obtained from SakuraTV after the incident with the second Kira. His mind had no wondering thoughts as he tried to decipher the meaning behind this message. He had asked Light, simply to study Light's reaction, but L knew Light was smart. If Light was Kira, as L suspected, Light would make an effort to act dumbfounded, which is exactly what happened. L didn't even want to bother asking the other members of the Task Force because every time he asked for somebody else to review the tapes, they would bring up how they needed another member.
It annoyed L that Ukita has been murdered by the second Kira in front of SakuraTV, but annoyed him even more when the Task Force used it as an excuse to get somebody new.
"Come on Ryuzaki, Ukita was a vital member of this team, and now that he is gone, we are missing a link. We need somebody new!" L turned at the sound of his alias, Ryuzaki, to find it was none other than Matsuda again.
"You see, Matsuda, the time it took for me to reveal my face to a select few means I am in no hurry to show it once more." L's monotone voice made Matsuda frown.
Whereas L was annoyed by Matsuda's eternal joy, Matsuda was annoyed by L's lack of emotion.
Soichiro Yagami, the police chief and father of Light Yagami, opened his mouth, "Ryuzaki, you know I hardly ever agree with Matsuda, but I think he may be right. Ukita was important to this task force, and now it feels as if we could be missing information due to the lack of people."
This made L look up from his computer. It wasn't very often that Chief Yagami made suggestions to him, so L made sure to take it into consideration.
L played with the thought in his head, trying to figure out all the possibilities. If he were to find a new member of the Task Force, it would mean risk. He would have to decide if this new person was Kira, and then if he could trust them to be around all the Kira information. There was also a chance that the new person would be absolutely useless. However, L did try to justify adding a new person. A new person would mean new theories on some of this information. Somebody looking at it with fresh eyes mean that they might pick up on something new. A new person could be very useful.
L rose from his sitting crouch, standing barefoot on the floor. His shoulders slumped as if he was caring a weight. "Ah yes, Mr. Yagami, thank you for your input. I have decided that it may be beneficial to the group to find someone to replace Ukita. We may find that a new mind has new ideas, which could be very useful. In fact, there is a 72% chance that this person may notice something we haven't yet. With that being said, I am going to take it upon myself to hand-pick somebody new."
Matsuda looked slightly annoyed that after all his pleading, it wasn't until Chief Yagami had said something that Ryuzaki would actually take it into consideration.
L perched back on his chair and pressed the key to speak with Watari. Warari's signature "W" appeared on the screen.
"Yes, Ryuzaki, what can I do for you?"
L answered, "Please, Watari, could you get me the files containing the possible replacements for Ukita?"
"Yes, I will bring them to you right away." The "W" flickered off the screen, signaling the Watari had ended the call.
L stood up from his chair once more and paced over to the window, "I had already thought of the possibility that you would request somebody to fill Ukita's position, so I had Watari find some possibly useful people. I will be doing research on each individual, and one I found one that has a particular set of skills we could us, I will issue them tests to see just how useful the will be to the Kira investigation."
At that time, a light knock was heard on the door before it opened. Watari entered. He was an old man with a thick white mustache. "Here are the files you requested Ryuzaki. I hope you don't mind, but I placed one in particular on the front. I think you better look at that one."
L answered, "Mm, yes thank you Watari." L squatted back on his chair and opened the files. The image on the first file was the of a brown-hair, brown-eyes girl. Kyara Mosi. This was the one Watari thought L should look at. As L studied her file, he became confused as to why Watari would specify this person. She was a smart student, but was not anywhere near being of intellectual use. She had just graduated from high school, but had not done well on her placement exams. L figured that there must be some skill she possessed that could not be measured at school.
L flipped to the last page of her file where a comments section was left. L had instructed Watari to write down any important information that was not found amongst the other paperwork. For Kyara Mosi, Watari had left the note that she was excellent with emotions, so much so that she was often asked in school to take over confrontations that the counsellors could not handle. L understood now that Watari had thought L would want somebody who could do something that he couldn't. L was not very good with emotions. He couldn't tell how someone was feeling unless it was obvious. L made a mental note to thoroughly research Kyara.
L continued to look through the other files, but none seemed useful. L returned to Kyara's file and read it once more. He thought how it was unfortunate that she wasn't more intellectual, otherwise she would be perfect.
After the Task Force had left, L pulled up his database. Being the world's greatest detective had its perks, including access to federal databases. L searched Kyara Mosi, and found that she had been born in southern Japan, but had recently moved to the Kanto region. He found where her flat was and decided that he would watch her. L spent all night searching about Kyara Mosi.
When the sun finally rose, L had already been waiting outside of Kyara's flat building. It wasn't long until the girl walked out of the building. L made mental note of every detail about her. She was about 5'6, looked to be quite reserved, and she had a permanent look of anxiety. L instructed Watari to follow her, but to not make it obvious.
After a day of following her and seeing all her daily actions, L decided that he would test her. He thought she might prove to be very useful, and may be smarter than her school records show. He waited until she was sitting on a park bench, staring at the birds.
L exited the car, and slowly paced over to the bench Kyara was sitting on. L slipped of his shoes, stepped on the bench, and crouched. Kyara looked at L from the side of her eyes, but did not turn toward him.
L, not being very good at beating around the bush, asked, "Do you know of the Kira case?"
Kyara didn't answer at first because she wasn't sure that this strange man was talking to her. There wasn't anybody around, but the bags under his eyes indicated that he could be sleep-deprived and hallucinating. She finally answered, "Yes, I've heard about it. I don't follow it much, but I have seen the broadcasts from Kira and L."
Without a moments notice, L calmly spoke to her, "I am L."
