How can emptiness be so heavy

There were many times in Deyanira's life when she felt empty, where her soul felt like nothing more than an endless void of loneliness. She saw no end to the darkness at times and how she longed to give in, to let the darkness win. Because as much as she wanted to be empty, she was not; she was so full that she could overflow and drown in her own emotions at any moment.

Deyanira ran through the forest. With every stride, her feet spent less time on the ground. Her legs were aching from years of unuse and strain. She paid no mind to the thorns that were snagging at her skin and the rocks that were cutting into her feet. The only thing she was paying attention to was running. She was fueling all of her energy and willpower into still running after hours of it. A light was appearing, and she knew that she was reaching civilization. She saw the road in front of her, and she sped towards it. As she was approaching, a thick root caught her leg, and before she knew it, she was being dragged. She was dragged back to that place, to that hell.

Deya awoke with a gasp. It was still dark outside, and Penelope slept peacefully on her bed. Deya shook herself off and tried to calm her racing heart. She realized there was no way she was falling back to sleep, so she climbed out of bed and pulled out the stack of books she had rented from the library. She had hated how behind she was when she first joined a public school. While her sense of style and looks helped her climb the social ladder, she secretly loved learning. She never wanted to be out of the loop again, and since officially joining the supernatural world, she had made it her mission to learn everything she could. The majority of them were focused on her classes, but the ones she had pulled out tonight were about travelers. A simple blood test she had done yesterday confirmed that she was, in fact, a traveler. Dr. Saltzman still didn't understand how, but he said that she shouldn't worry about it. Despite this, she was still determined to learn all that she could.

So that was how Deya spent her time until the sun rose, hunched over a book, wondering about who she was.

🔥🔥🔥

Deya sat in the assembly hall for what felt like the thousandth time since she got here. "Given recent events, some students have expressed concern that I am not allowing you to have a say in the decisions that affect your future." The headmaster spoke from where he stood at the front of the room and directed his eyes to his daughters. "And I agree. If you are expected to abide by this school's policies, it's only fair that you have a voice in how those rules are made. So, I am forming an honor council. One vampire, one witch, and one werewolf, each elected by their peers, along with our school counselor, Emma, whose vote will represent the younger students. Now, I have to go off campus. In the meantime, I expect you to make good decisions and vote wisely. That is all. You are dismissed."

🔥🔥🔥

"So?" Deya asked as she met Rafael and Landon in their dorm room.

"Dr. Saltzman told me that the honor council might be able to decide if Landon can stay."

"Okay, okay, this is good. This is good, right?" She asked as she paced back and forth across the wooden floors.

"This is good." Raf confirmed, "This means if we can convince all the students who will be on the honor council, then we can make sure you stay." He told Landon. Landon nodded, and the three foster siblings shared a determined look. They weren't going down without one hell of a fight.

"Can you handle that, Raf?" Deya asked. "Landon and I have to be tested today." She complained. Rafael nodded, and Landon looked at Deya quizzically.

"Why are you being tested?"

"According to Dr. Saltzman, the species of witch that I am are extinct." She elaborated.  "I don't really know how that's possible, but I digress."

"Okay...?" Landon somewhat agreed. He rose from the bed, and Deya gave Rafael a quick hug before she followed Landon to the headmaster's office.
