They kept walking deeper into the city, the spot where they arrived becoming less and less visible as Biana looked back. It looked as if they were inside a volcano, with all of the amber and black boulders everywhere.
"I can't believe this was under the Panakes tree this whole time," Linh said in awe.
"Yeah, I'm sure someone knew about it, but I can't believe Grady and Edaline didn't ever find out about it. They would've told me... right?" Sophie asked, started to doubt her parents.
"I'm sure they didn't know," Biana said comfortingly.
"Yeah well, I hope you're right..." Sophie sighed. They continued to walk through the paths paved into the hard ground, now silent. Suddenly, Biana heard a noise in between the soft clacking of their feet hitting the ground. It sounded as if something was rolling toward them. Biana looked around, but to her relief, everything was normal.
"Do you guys hear that?" Biana asked, suddenly worried.
"Hear what?" Dex wondered.
"That noise... it's like-"
"RUN!" Sophie screamed before Biana could finish. Everyone whipped their heads around except for Sophie, searching for what spooked Biana. Suddenly, they spotted it. A boulder was rolling toward them!
"That's what!" Biana screamed at Dex. They all dashed forward, desperate to lose the boulder... wait. "Boulders can't chase people!" Biana thought. She looked behind them, and saw a glimpse of a yellow, glowing eye being squashed every time the large rock hit the ground with a loud thump. Biana screamed, and tripped over something.
"Biana!" Linh yelled. Biana looked down, and saw that she had fallen onto another boulder, she saw something yellow again... another eye! It blinked and Biana screamed again.
"Wait for me!" She yelled as they all ran into a tunnel, with a small opening. A square opening.
"They won't be able to fit in here!" Keefe exclaimed as everyone heard loud thumping as the boulders tried desperately to enter.
"Uhhh... Keefe?" Linh pointed up to the ceiling, a huge crack starting to form, coming right from the square entry. "What do we do?" Linh asked terrified.
"Come with me!" A meek voice behind the group said. They all jumped. A small creature stood in front of them. It had large eyes and small, owl-like feet, but it had black fur. "Come with me," It repeated. They all looked at each other, slowly backing away. Bang! A loud sound echoed through the tunnel, and the ceiling finally opened, the large boulders rolling toward them again.
"Who are you?" Sophie asked the creature frantically.
"Come with me!" It squealed, ignoring Sophie's question. It started to shuffle away, its black fur picking up dirt as it moved. They started running with it, realizing that being alive is more important. The boulders picked up speed, almost crushing Linh as it rolled over her cloak. She undid her clasp, and the cloak flew behind her, being crushed under the boulder's heavy weight.
"Hurry!" Sophie yelled as they entered another tunnel, with the same square opening.
"Inside!" The small creature squeaked as the boulders pressed against the opening, eager to crack open the ceiling again. "Come with me!" The strange animal pointed a long crooked finger down to a square chute in the floor. It kicked its legs and exclaimed as it slid down into the dark unknown.
"Should we follow it?" Keefe asked.
"We don't have a choice!" Biana said as she pointed up at the crack in the ceiling. One by one, they all screamed, sliding down the tunnel.
"Ow!" Sophie yelled as Biana's heels hit her head at the end of the slide.
"Sorry!" Biana gasped as she observed the space around her. Clear light filtered into her eyes, straight from the center of the cave, a large baby blue crystal hanging from the ceiling.
"Finally!" Marella sighed as she snuffed out her flame.
"It's so beautiful!" Linh said as she ran over to the large center of the cave. "Water!" She cried. It flowed throughout the crystal, leaking in some parts, causing large waterfalls to form throughout the cave, pouring onto the small sphere structures below it.
"Those look like houses!" Linh crouched down to get a better look at the spheres, and peered inside. "Hey look! There are more of those creature thingies!" She pointed down at the houses excitedly.
"Where are we, and why did does that letter want us here?" Sophie wondered, stepping further into the cave, heading toward Linh. Suddenly she felt a chill, watching Linh shudder as well. "Did you... feel that?" She asked.
"Yeah, it was weird..." Linh looked at her surroundings. From behind her, Keefe stepped closer to Sophie.
"Should we try to find someone to talk to?" Keefe asked, unsure as he put his arm around her. Then, they heard a shuffle in front of them.
"Did you hear that?" Linh asked, surprised.
"Yeah but I don't see anything!" Sophie said, panicking. They started backing away, with Biana, Marella, and Dex walking closer to them.
"Come with me." The squeaky voice was back, but there was no small creature along with it.
"Isn't that that creature again?" Dex asked, looking around.
"Yeah, but I don't see him anywhere." Biana fumbled with her cloak, concerned. Suddenly, out of the shadows, they saw the creature that had spoken. They all jumped.
"Little dude," Keefe said, letting go of Sophie, "Where are we?"
"Come with me!" It stated once more. Then, it ran off back in the shadows near where the waterfall was.
"I mean, I guess we should follow it," Dex said. Everyone nodded, but Biana was the one who made the first step. After that, everyone else followed reluctantly.
"Why are there shadows here but not over there?" Sophie pondered as they ventured deeper into the darkness.
"I don't know... it doesn't make sense. If I could..." Dex started fidgeting with something in his pocket. "There!" Dex exclaimed. They all heard a shriek, watching as the shadows draping around them evaporated, replaced with certain a dark-haired elf.
"Tam!" Linh exclaimed. The twins hugged joyously, leaving everyone else confused.
"Tam? How did you get here?" Biana asked.
"Tammy Boy's just being the stalker he always was." Keefe smirked. Tam sighed.
"I heard what you said about going to Biana's apartment," He glanced at Linh, "And I thought you'd need some help, since you wouldn't let me come. Apparently I was right."
"Help? What are you talking about 'help'? We are perfectly fine down here in this cave!" Keefe said seriously. Everyone glared at him, especially Sophie. "Okay, I see your point," Keefe huffed, crossing his arms.
"Anyways... I followed you down here, and I barely escaped those boulders. This place is very weird..." Tam said vaguely as he continued down the tunnel.
"...Um, so are you going to tell us what you think is going on, or..." Keefe asked. When Tam didn't reply, Marella started laughing.
"Apparently not," She said, creating another glowing flame, illuminating their dark path.
"Did anyone see where that creature went?" Biana asked, after another five minutes of walking.
"No, but he couldn't have gone far... I mean, there's really no where else to go from here," Marella said.
Sophie sighed when they reached a stone wall. "Just another dead end!" She threw her hands up in the air, clearly exasperated.
"Well, whatever 'O' wanted us to find down here shouldn't be too far off," Biana said optimistically, only half believing it.
