"What's going on, dear?" Said Sophie, entering the room. Joe walked in after her and closed the doors. "Joe said you wanted to talk to me?"
"Yeah." She smiled weakly at her mom.
Her mom sat beside her on Joe's bed and grabbed her hands, seeing how anxious her daughter was. Ann knew she had to tell her, but she couldn't help the fear that was washing over her. Her hands started to shake, making Sophie frown.
"Is everything okay?" She said with a concerned voice.
Ann didn't know how to respond. Was everything okay? She finally accepted the baby and decided to keep it. She even already had a name for her. Yet, she was so scared everyone is going to turn against them. That they're going to hate them, that she's going to ruin Joe's career. It was all so much.
She didn't even notice when tears started to fall down her face as she started to struggle for breath. She felt her throat tightening up and her lungs getting smaller. Her gaze started to get blurry as she gasped for air.
"Oh my god!" Her mom screamed, not knowing what to do.
"Don't worry, it's just a panic attack." Joe ran up to her and picked her up, guiding her to his balcony for fresh air.
Ann immediately started to feel better at his embrace and even better when he sat her down on the chair on the balcony. He crouched in front of her and put his hands on her cheeks.
"Hey, look at me." He said, trying to get her attention. "Deep breaths, okay? Do it with me." He said, guiding her as he took them as well.
She was already feeling better, yet she didn't stop him. She felt so secure and warm around him that it felt too good to let go.
"I'm here." He whispered, scanning her face.
"You're here." She whispered back, smiling weakly. "Thank you."
"Oh, she looks better." Said Sophie, seeing that her pale face started to get some colors back. "Has this happened to her before?" She asked, seeing that Joe knew exactly what to do.
"Yeah, happened a few times lately." Said Joe, not taking eyes off of Ann.
"Why didn't I know about this?" She said crouching down beside Joe. "Are you that stressed out? Is it because of the tour?"
"No, mom." Ann said, shaking her head.
"Then what it is?"
Ann sighed, looking back at Joe. He gave her a reassuring nod and squeezed her knee, letting her know that he was there and it was a safe space for her to say it.
"Do you love me, mom?" She said, looking at her with watery eyes.
"Of course I love you." She said, squeezing her hand. "No matter what."
"I'll start with saying that me and Joe..." She hesitated as to what to call what they had. "Had a thing."
"Oh, I knew it!" She smiled looking at Joe. "And?" She asked, focusing back at Ann.
"And... If anyone would find out, I would get fired. So we ended things and Joe decided to fix things with Sophie."
"Okay..." She nodded, already knowing that fact. "Where are we going with this?"
Ann sighed and sat back, wiping her tears. "I'm pregnant. With Joe."
Sophie was silent, staring at her joined hand with her daughter. Ann felt as if her heart was about jump out of her chest. Joe kept rubbing her knee, giving her the comfort she needed. The silence was killing her.
