They managed to calm themselves down, wiping each other's tears. He took another look at Ann, before helping her get up from the examination table and guiding her into the bathroom.
She leaned onto the sink, trying to calm down her breathing. She was having a baby girl. Something she always dreamed of. And she was having it with the man she loved. The man that treated her better than anyone. The man that was... taken.
She sighed and changed back into her bike shorts, putting the disposable skirt in the trash. She walked out of the bathroom, hearing that Joe was already talking with the doctor.
"Ah yes, Mrs. Hart. I was just saying, that I'll need to see you at least once a month now. Later on, we will meet more often, but for now, once a month will do."
She looked at Joe a little concerned. She didn't think about it. What is their excuse going to be, having to leave to LA every month, just them two? Everything about this pregnancy just seemed wrong and screaming that's it's not going to work. But yet, she found so much comfort in having Joe with her on it. She knew he would somehow made it work.
"I know you're on tour and it'll be difficult." He nodded. "But this is a must. We have to keep track of the baby."
"Of course, doctor." Said Joe. "We'll be here, no matter what."
"That's it from me now. Mrs. Hart, if you start to feel weird, if something's going to bother you, feel free to call me." He said handing her his card.
"Thank you, doctor." She smiled at him, taking the card.
"You have a busy life with this tour, so I advise you take as much time to rest between the shows as you can." He said, standing up.
"I'll make sure she does." Joe smiled at him, shaking his hand. "Thank you."
"Thank you. Take care." He said, shaking Ann's hand.
Joe put his hand on Ann's back as they left the room. The same guy who escorted them was waiting outside for them, leading them back to the exit.
Ann was at a loss of words, as was Joe. They were both filled with so many emotions at once. They both felt excitement, happiness, but also fear. It all felt so good and so wrong at the same time. Which is what they always felt about anything in their relationship.
They went through the back doors and quickly into the suv. Ann heard her phone ring as she sat down. It was her mom. She answered, putting her on speaker as she fastened her seat belt.
"Hey!" She said with a shaky voice.
"Hey, honey, you're not responding to my texts, so I thought I'll call you. I'm here, are you going to pick me up like you said or should I just call an Uber?"
"No, no! I'm coming. I mean, we're coming. Joe's here."
"Hey!" Joe said with a smile.
"No way! My favorite son in law!" She squealed making Ann roll her eyes. "Can't wait to see you. Both of you, of course!"
"Yeah, right." Ann chuckled. "We're on our way. Be there in about 15 minutes."
"Okay, see you!" She said, before hanging up.
She placed the phone on her lap and sighed.
"Hey." She felt his hand gently rubbing hers. She turned to look at him and gave him a weak smile. "You were so strong. I'm proud of you."
"Thank you for being there with me."
Joe smiled back at her and looked down at the ultrasound photo that the doctor gave them. She watched him as he scanned every inch of it with the same proud smile. She loved this soft side of him. He looked back at her, catching her eyes. He smiled and placed the photo next to his face.
