The night hadn't gone exactly as Mordecai planned. Quite the opposite, in fact.
After a long, and trifling shoot-out, along with the insane mystery man blowing up an entire water tower, flooding the quarry site in the process, (dynamite was involved) the unfortunate rival bootlegger gang, who Mordecai recognized as Lackadaisy; his old stomping ground, managed to escape.
The tuxedo cat was unsure of how this was even possible, considering 2/3 members were injured, 2/3 had seemingly gone insane, and their car was totaled.
After making a quick call to his boss, Mordecai sat on the gravely ground next to his companions, the Savoy twins; Serafine and Nicodeme.
The two were eccentric, and wild. But at least they cared enough about their job to do some damage.
Earlier, before the bootleggers of Lackadaisy had fully escaped, Mordecai had overheard the orange young cat call the mysterious man in the blue suit, 'Rocky'. Now Mordecai realized why the man was so familiar. 6 or so years ago, Mordecai had worked at Lackadaisy, and during that passing time, he had spent a bit of time with Rocky.
Back then, Rocky was less chaotic. Eccentric, loud, and all-around a bit dim-witted. But not crazy. Mordecai assumed that at some point after he left Mitsi and the Lackadaisy to work for Asa instead, Rocky must've lost his mind a bit.
The poetry was always a Rocky staple, however. His favorites being among Shakespearian plays. 'Macbeth', and the like. Constantly quoting, strumming his violin along with the speech. Simler to what he was doing when Mordecai had accidentally run into him on the bridge, earlier.
Mordecai narrowed his piercing green eyes, as a mulled over the thought of Rocky. He was just... Strange. The tuxedo cat could never fully figure out what was behind those luminesce blue eyes. Was Mr. Rocky Rickaby really as idiotic as he seemed? Or was there some sort of creative intelligence deep inside his mind? He seemed, at the least, philosophical.
His ears were asymmetrical though. That was a deal breaker.
Mordecai glanced up from his cufflinks, that he was inspecting for damage, at the car horn that was honking a few feet away. Asa Sweet, Mordecai and the Savoy twins superior, pulled up in his Bugatti Royale, leaning out the driver's side window.
"Mordecai Heller, fancy seein' you here." Asa smirked at Mordecai, and he sent a glare in return.
Mordecai waltzed around to the passenger's side, nodding in satisfaction as Serafine and Nico sat in the back, leaving space between each other. Perfect symmetry.
To Mordecai's thankfulness, Asa said nothing on the ride to the Marigold Room (the speakeasy he worked for), so the drive was peacefully quiet. Which gave Mordecai the thinking time he needed.
Rocky Rickaby was a strange individual. Like the dawn, he shone brightly, impossible not to notice. And also like the dawn, he brought unexpected events. Never sure what the day ahead might bring.
He reminded Mordecai of a firework. Unsure of when he might strike but knowing he's coming. And knowing it will be loud.
Like teetotal at a bar. Simply surprising, but to Mordecai, seemingly pleasant.
Mordecai shivered and his tail flicked, as the word pleasant popped into his head. Rocky was FAR from 'pleasant'. He was obnoxious, a conundrum, chaotic, unhinged.
But there was something... wonderful, about his chaos. It wasn't random. It was calculated. Rocky knew that dynamite would cause mass-destruction. The flooding wasn't planned, but the explosions were. Rocky wanted to destroy that quarry. Why, Mordecai had no idea. But there was motivation there, and even Mordecai had to recognize it.
And it warmed him. Puzzled him, sure. But warmed his soul as well.
