December 31st

Two questions.

Where were they taking me?

And who the hell was Levi?

I looked at Phoenix and chuckled.

"What makes you think I'd just walk off with two complete strangers. I just met you and just because I had a small conversation with you guys doesn't mean I trust you. For all I know you could be plotting to kill me down another alleyway. Or worse." I argued, crossing my arms in front of my chest, trying to make my point.

"You're right. That's a possibility." His hard gaze refused to leave mine as he rose from his crouching position.

"But you have nothing better to do, nowhere you have to be, right?"

I bit my lip.
He was right.

I had nothing.

"Hey Nikki, that was a bit harsh..." I heard Dan say innocently. Phoenix glanced back at his brother. Suddenly he dropped his cigarette and smothered it with his worn-out converses but not before he looked at me coldly.

"I'm just telling the truth. She needs this." Dan slowly nodded in agreement and I closed my eyes quickly learning that Phoenix may not be as friendly as he looked.

"Ok, so where the hell are you guys going anyway and who is this "Levi" guy." I stated firmly, grabbing hold of the wall next to me to help pull myself up. I realised how tall both Dan and Phoenix were; they completely towered over me.

Dan laughed slightly.
"You want to know huh?" I frowned at him.

"Of course, I want to know. Did you really think I was just going to walk away with you with no explanation?"

"Well, long story short, we were just on our way home. And Levi is our..." He hesitated before glancing at Phoenix.

"Well...he's family."

"Family?" He nodded slowly.
"Yeah...you could say that..." I turned to face Phoenix and he nodded, as if to convince me that all I had just heard, was true.

I still wasn't convinced.

I dusted the snow down from my jeans.
"Family...sure but you know what, you can just tell me the truth when we get there."

"You're coming?"

I smiled at the childish Dan.
"Yup, as he said." I mustered the coldest glare I could ever manage and aimed it at Phoenix.
"I have nothing better to do." He frowned.

"The truth hurts." I sighed and then shook my head at him.

"Well maybe you should try and be a little nicer to people you've just met." He gave me a curious look as he lowered his gaze and looked at the muddy ground in front of him.

"Nicer huh..." Before I knew it, he had turned around quickly and started to walk in the direction he came from.

"Dan can show you the way, I have things to do." And with that he was gone.
I turned and faced Dan.

"What's his problem?"

"Ignore him, he can get a bit...distant at times. Don't blame him though, he wasn't always like that."

"So, what happened?" He coughed and took out a fresh cigarette since his brother destroyed his other one.

"Our mom wasn't exactly the best...you know? She got high...a lot. She did a lot of terrible things. Turned him as cold as ice." I nodded because I knew how it felt.
