the day was gloomy.
mei took note of the clouds covering the sunshine that so desperately wanted to pass through to shine a little bit of light to the city. she took note of the winds that seemed harsher today. she took note of the sullen strangers that she passed by as she walked to school, most complaining because of the weather. she took note of the sudden chilly temperature that caused her to hold onto her jacket a little tighter.
she also took note of what she wanted to do today. it was time to confront xingqiu.
she had been ignoring him for a couple of days. she wouldn't sit with him at lunch, or talk to him during freetime, or simply basking in each other's presence. she went as far as not answering his texts and leaving him on read. she would decline his calls too.
just so that he could taste his own medicine.
not that mei was complaining, she actually felt peace from not talking to him. she didn't have anyone to fuss over, to stress over, or to even mull over. it's not that she didn't miss him, no. but it was nice to take a break from someone who wasn't giving her the same attention as how she would.
she arrived to school after a few walks, directly going to xingqiu's table. xingqiu, who was quietly reading in his seat, realized that someone was walking towards him, and looked up, only to find mei with a serious look on her face. he gulped and asked after mustering his courage, "mei. . .?"
"meet me at my house afterschool," she said and left, not even sparing a glance after. xingqiu silently watched her as she walked to her own seat and started playing her phone, and retreated back to his seat. he sighed, wondering what he could've done that made the blonde-haired girl to be so upset.

mei waited silently at the comfort of her home. she went home right after school had finished, not wanting to walk together with xingqiu. she sat down at her comfiest chair as she tried to think of ways to start the conversation. one would think she was mentally ready, but in truth, she was scared.
she wasn't scared of losing him, she was scared he wouldn't take it well.
she seemed to be lost in her thoughts when suddenly her doorbell rang, signifying that xingqiu had already arrived. she took a deep breath and opened the door, seeing an awkward xingqiu at the front. she opened the door wider and let him in, both of them then sat on the couch in silence before mei broke it first.
"you know, sometimes i feel like i'm invisible to you."
"huh? what do you mean?"
this motherfucker—
mei calmed herself down and said, "you're always reading or just plain out ignoring me. i feel like i'm talking to a wall."
xingqiu frowned, "look, i'm sorry—"
"that's what you always say but nothing's changed, xingqiu!" mei glared at him, "it feels like you don't even notice me anymore."
xingqiu glared back at her and said, "that's not true, i care about you a lot."
"do you? because i can't feel it," mei looked away, trying to dissipate her anger away by taking deep breaths, "i just want you to care, is that so much to ask?"
"well, maybe i can't give you what you want," xingqiu muttered while looking away.
at this point, mei already had tears in her eyes. she clenched her fist and grit her teeth, "maybe this isn't working anymore."
xingqiu didn't say anything but looked over to mei, his eyes saddening. he regretted whatever words he said about not being able to give her what she wants. because it's not a matter of 'not being able' but 'choosing not to'. he could give her anything, but he just doesn't. he realized that too late. he reached out to touch her shoulder, but she moves away, breaking his heart.
"we'll talk again tomorrow, i need some space to figure things out," she said dejectedly and looks away.
xingqiu sighed and dropped his hand back to the side, muttering a small 'okay' and leaving her house, and leaving her alone again with a storm of emotions and neverending thoughts. the conversation comes to an abrupt halt as both mei and xingqiu retreat into their own thoughts, their emotions too raw to continue the discussion at that moment. The distance between them feels palpable, and the unresolved tension lingers in the air, leaving their relationship in a state of uncertainty.
