"What's wrong with you son?" Alex heard his father Stellan ask as the family arrived at their summer home. "You've been acting strange ever since we came down here."
He looked at him and let out a sigh. "I met a girl." Just this one sentence from his oldest son made Stellan's ears perk. He led Alex out to the patio and sat him down.
"Alright I'm all ears. Tell me about her, son." Stellan said and waited for Alex to start.
Alex breathed in and looked out over the lake their house was located at. "I found her on the side of the road to Trollbäcken. Her car broke down and I offered to bring her home to her family." Sighing Alex leanded back in the deck chair. "But I'll probably never see her again. She's only staying there for the summer before she has to get back to her job in New York."
Stellan looked thoughtfull. It had been a while since Alex had someone to call his own. He wasn't fond of any woman that his son brought home at first. When he met Kate for the first time Stellan thought it was only for her to be noticed more, but he got to know her and his first impression wasn't true. She was a nice woman, but things for Alex and Kate didn't work out.
"Son, let me tell you, no matter what you'll find the perfect girl for you."
"Oh come on dad, giving me relationship advice isn't really your department." Alex said, snorting and leaning on his knees.
"Still, I know what I'm talking about. It took me 35 years of marriage to see that your mom and I weren't right. I loved her very much, but we grew apart and I'm also sorry for all the pain we caused for all of you."
"Thanks, dad." Alex said and got up from his seat. "I'll go for a run." With that he left. Stellan looked after his son.
Groaning Carolyn rolled over in her bed, just to be met with something wet. "Ugh! Colby out!" she said turning back. Colby was the big Shepard dog of the older couple that usually watched the summer house for the family.
Whenever Carolyn had visited with her family she would take Colby and go for a long walk at the shore of the lake. He loved the attention that he was getting form Carolyn and showed it in the usual way for a dog, a wagging tail and wet kissy licks.
Sighing she got out of the bed and did her usual morning routine, getting dressed so she could take Colby out.
"Come on boy, let's breath some fresh air." she said and putting him on the leash before leaving the quiet house, as everyone was still sleeping and enjoying the time off.
Knowing that not many people were walking around that area of the lake Carolyn took the leash off of him and let him run around for a bit. The dog was happy bouncing around like a young puppy dog, wanting to play with her. Once she had to hold him back and told him to stay by her side, but he was normally a very peaceful, sweet dog.
Up ahead she could make out the shape of something or someone moving. Colby must have sensed her slight fear that had taken over and stood on alert, protecting his master if the time would come.
As they came nearer to the running thing Carolyn could make out shapes. Tall build, short, blonde hair, athletic body, chest heaving with every breath. Just by seeing that she got all hot and bothered. Realizing where her thoughts were going, Carolyn shook her head and reached for Colby so he wouldn't attack the runner.
As her fingers only met air and the sound of Colby barking was heard, Carolyn snapped out of her daze and ran after the dog, trying to warn the person that was going to get 'attacked' by Colby.
"Stop it! Colby! Get back!" she shouted but nothing helped, stopping the dog. He ran at full speed at the jogger, propelling him and throwing them both to the ground.
"WHOA!!" Alex shouted as he was thrown down by the brown, white and black blur of the thing that was running at him. Looking up he looked into the face of a big shepard dog, which at first growled and then put his nose down to sniff at him. He had been around dogs for some time and knew that it wouldn't be good if he did anything rash.
"Colby! Stop it!" he could hear the person, that was coming after the dog, shout. "You stupid dog. Get off of him." It was definately a woman. Looking around the dog, Colby he could see her clear as day.
"Carolyn?!" Alex asked astonished at seeing her again.
"Alex!?" she answered once Carolyn had gotten near them and pulled the dog off of him. "I'm so sorry. He's normally very loveable. I don't know what's gotten into him." she babbled as Colby laid down next to her while Carolyn was kneeling next to Alex, making sure he wasn't hurt or anything.
"It's alright. Nothing happened." Alex said, sitting up more and brushing off the dirt that was on his upper body. Carolyn looked him over and saw a few shallow scraps on his knees.
"Sure. You scrapped your knees. I should take a look at that before it gets infected." she said and got up from the ground next to Alex, reaching out a hand to help him up. As they stood like that, infront of each other, Carolyn took a long look at him.
The first time they met she looked at Alex, but she knew nothing could come off it, but now Carolyn couldn't help but stare deeply into his blue eyes.
"Carolyn?" she heard Alex asked and shook her head to get rid of the images that were playing in her head.
"Huh? What?"
"I asked if you were alright. You just spaced out on me." Alex said, laughing softly which turned into a wince as he moved his foot. "We'd better get that looked at. Our house isn't far. Do you think you can make it there?" Carolyn asked and helped Alex up from the ground.
"Let's get going." he said and leaned his tall frame on her leaner body. Nodding her head Carolyn lead him to the house her family stayed at.
During the walk Alex decided to stop the silence that was going on around them. "So what brought you down to Öland?" Carolyn looked over at him trying not to look guilty at his obvious discomfort.
"My family decided to come down for a bit of summer vacation." she explained and smiled as she saw the lake house coming into view. "We're nearly there."
Alex looked up ahead and let out a relieved sigh, as he caught sight of the house. But as he looked closer his eyebrows rose. "That's your summer home? That's where the older couple lives with their dog. What's the name agian?" Alex said as he tried to recall the last name of the couple.
"Hagen." Carolyn told him and Alex nodded. "Yeah. So it seems we're neighbours."
"What do you mean?" Alex grinned as she saw Carolyn's shoked expression.
"Well, our home away from home is just a bit further from your house, so practically we're neighbours."
Carolyn just nodded and lead Alex to the house, being careful not to hurt him more while they made their way up the stairs.
"You better sit down on the chair, I'll be back with the first aid kit." she said and Alex sank down in the deck chair, grateful to be off of his feet.
Shortly Carolyn returned, setting on fixing up his knee, with the occasional wince on his part, when she cleaned out the cuts and wrapped them, and a muttered 'sorry' on hers.
"Okay, all done." Carolyn said, smiling at her handiwork.
"Thanks." Alex said and grinned at her.
"Would you like something to drink?" she asked and looked at him. "Sure." Alex confirmed and waited until Carolyn would get back with the drinks, enjoying the view over the lake.
