The Witch

"I can't do it," I groaned loudly, pulling my hands away.

We had been out there for almost two hours now, just standing out in the quiet clearing.

He sighed. "You'll learn."

"When," I asked sharply. "If it's more than twenty-four hours I'm screwed."

"We'll cross that bridge when we get there, but, for now, keep trying," he said. "We should head back anyway."

A sharp snapping of twigs split the quiet of the forest around us. My body immediately became a statue.

"Was that—"

Levi sniffed the air, his eyes becoming fully engulfed by the pitch black of his pupils.

"Hunters," he practically snarled. "Fuck. How did they stop me from sensing them?"

He gripped my arm, the world seemed to melt away for a moment before the sound of a gun exploded in my eardrums and we were both on the ground.

Levi roared in pain as he gripped his shoulder.

"Get out of here," he groaned. "Run! Don't stop until you hit the main road. Take the keys."

He fumbled for his keys before stretching out his arm to hand them to me.

"What about you," I asked frantically.

"Who gives a shit about me," he snarled. "Get to the car and find Mal!"

I was running. Again. Always running. Always hiding. It was no different today.

As I ran, footsteps followed and that terrible feeling of fear seized my lungs. My feet felt like lead in my shoes and it felt like my legs were being swallowed into the earth.

It was like living out a nightmare where each step purchased only millimeters of distance. I couldn't run fast enough to escape this.

I looked behind me to see how close they were. I could only see blurs following about twenty yards behind me and as I turned back around, I was faced with a gun aimed directly between my eyes. The sound of a bullet being loaded into the chamber made my body go numb.

"There you are, witch," the man behind the weapon spoke coldly. "We've been looking for you."

"Please," I begged helplessly. "I didn't mean to hurt anyone!"

"You killed one of our brethren," he said grimly. "And you have chosen to hide amongst evil incarnate."

"I didn't choose this," I said, my eyes blurring. "I didn't choose any of it!"
