JANUARY eleventh was a saturday. it was also the last night before michael geller's return home. the two sisters — as well as none other than gracie abrams — were crammed up on the couch. despite the large amount of free couch-space, they had all decided to cuddle up on one side, warming up under a thick blanket.
their third disney movie, moana, was playing on the tv. snacks were scattered on the table, as well as various face masks and nail polishes. a saturday-girls-night. just like the geller girls used to do every saturday before august moved out.
gracie's phone vibrated on the table. she ignored it — probably just her cousin sending her some stupid meme. then it buzzed again. and again. shortly after it was about to buzz off the coffee table. gracie groaned, pushing herself up and grabbing it.
august's eyes followed her every movement, hoping to figure out what was going on through body language. she couldn't figure the exact situation, but the way gracie's brows knitted together and her teeth nibbled on her bottom lip, gave away that whatever was going on wasn't on the positive side.
gracie put her phone to her ear and stormed out the room, leaving the geller sisters with no explanation whatsoever.
"what's up, babe?" she mumbled into the phone.
brandon's voice was loud and slurred on the other end of the call, "hi baby, can you come pick me up? kyle left with some girl, i have no way of getting home."
"where are you even?" gracie asked, furrowing her brows. brandon had told her he'd be spending the night watching football at luke's place. from what she could hear through the phone, it didn't sound like that was what he was doing.
"i'm at that club! that one by that restaurant you like so much!" he answered. gracie could barely hear what he was saying, the music banging in the background was way too loud.
the abrams girl sighed, running a hand through her hair. she looked back in the living room, back at her two beloved girls. elizabeth was focused on the movie, singing along to maui's song. august on the other hand, was looking towards gracie with worry written all over her face. 'are you okay?' august mouthed as soon as she caught gracie's eye.
the brunette nodded, turning back around and answering her boyfriend. "can't you walk home? order an uber?"
"nah, i don't have money for an uber! i'm too drunk to walk all the way home," he admitted. gracie scoffed, it wasn't loud enough for brandon to hear. the club was only a ten minute walk from brandon's apartment. he could easily walk home.
"okay, babe, i'll be there soon," she sighed, rubbing her left hand over her face.
"sick! bye babe, love you!" brandon yelled.
"i love you too..." gracie mumbled. brandon had already hung up the phone before she got to finish her sentence.
the abrams girl re-entered the living room where she was met with august concerned face. the redhead asked her once again if she was okay. gracie nodded, forcing a smile. "i'm sorry, i have to go, like, now," she mumbled, "sorry."
"what?" august asked, confused, "what's up, angel? everything okay?" gracie just shook her head, dismissing her. but august wasn't having any of that. she got up and grabbed gracie's wrist, dragging her out of the living room and away from elizabeth's earshot. "gracie, tell me." she said firmly.
"i have to go pick brandon up from lumina, he's drunk," gracie shrugged, gathering her stuff and stuffing them into her purse.
"what? lumina is right by his place? can't he get himself home? order an uber? he's a grown man, not a helpless child," august blurted out. she hadn't meant to be so blunt. sure, it was what she thought, it was her exact opinion on brandon, but she didn't mean to be so rude about it.
"he says he doesn't have the money for an uber, and he shouldn't be walking home when he's drunk! it's dangerous!" gracie defended both herself and brandon. the latter didn't deserve any defending.
august scoffed, staring at her best friend in disbelief, "he doesn't have money for an uber? how broke is he? he has a whole ass job where i know he makes a shit ton of money? did he seriously spend it all on alcohol?" she asked, "and gracie, brandon is a 6'2, broad-shouldered, muscular man, i don't think anyone's going to try anything if he walks home."
"can you just stop, august?!" gracie snapped, yelling at the redhead, "he's my boyfriend! i'm allowed to take care of him! he's allowed to ask me for help! why do you always feel the need to interfere with my relationships?!" tears were forming in her eyes, but she blinked them away.
august was taken aback, staring at the brunette in shock. gracie never yelled at her. she had never once raised her voice in front of her. "i'm sorry, gra—"
"—no! august, i don't want to hear it! i'm leaving now, goodbye!" gracie interrupted, storming out the door, slamming it behind her. she didn't even get to say goodbye to poor little elizabeth.
august stayed where she was, her eyes lingering on the slammed door gracie had just left through. they had argued before, but it had never happened this way. the redhead felt like shit. she shouldn't have been so annoyingly curious, she shouldn't have asked so many questions. gracie's relationship was none of her business. why was she the way she was?
two whole weeks pass by. gracie and august hadn't spoken a word to each other since that night gracie stormed out. the abrams girl was mad. so was the geller girl. for two different, yet so similar reasons.
"thank you for letting me stay here, tay, seriously, i don't think i could handle being alone right now," august frowned, wrapping her arms around the woman's arms. after her dad arrived back home the following day, august had driven right to taylor's front door. the blonde singer always knew what to say and do.
one night turned to two, and two turned to many more. august spent two weeks at taylor's house, crying in the woman's arms every single night. she knew she had pissed gracie off, and gracie had also annoyed her, but she missed the brunette so incredibly much.
so, so much.
