OPENING for the era's tour was supposed to be a fun experience, the experience of a lifetime. but recently, it hadn't felt like it. august wasn't by her side anymore, and gracie couldn't enjoy performing, knowing her bumblebee wasn't in the crowd, cheering for her.
august was back at home, back in the angel's city, dragging herself through each day.
it was the week between the cincinnati concert and the show in kansas city, when taylor promised herself she'd get the two younger women to talk. to tell her what was going on and why they were avoiding each other, when both of them were clearly hating their time apart.
"okay, gracie, august, tell me what the fuck is going on, why are you two unable to be in the same room at the same time?" she asked when all three of them were seated on the couch. it'd been quite awkward and uncomfortable when the girls first saw each other, seeing as none of them knew the other one would be there.
none of the girls said anything, none of the, had talked since their arrival.
"come on, someone just talk!" taylor was getting impatient, she could see how much the no-contact-thing was affecting both of them. gracie and august glanced at each other, hoping the other would start talking. but none of them did. "c'mon! august, you talk. now." taylor groaned, her voice firm as she looked at the redhead.
"oh come on! that's not fa—" august protested, but the look on taylor's face made her shut up and do as the blonde said, "ugh, um, a few weeks ago i took gracie out for a little date thingy, because, well because she's my best friend and she wasn't doing that well after the breakup and i wanted her to know how special she is, so i took her to the aquarium," she explained.
taylor nodded along, occasionally glancing over at gracie who was looking down at her lap, fidgeting with her fingers and biting her bottom lip. "and you got into a fight? that's why aren't talking?" the blonde guessed.
august shook her head, taking a deep breath before continuing, "no, uh, after the aquarium we went to the beach to get ice cream...and in the evening we ate pizza on the roof...uh, i guess, i mean— i think we almost kissed? i dunno, yes, no, yeah, we did, we did...almost kiss."
taylor flight back her laugh. the girls were hilarious and adorable all at once. she wasn't even shocked, everyone had seen it coming. she just fond it so incredibly funny that that caused them to actively avoid each other for a whole month. but she didn't laugh, she understood them, she'd also been young and in love before. things were weird and they were complicated.
"i think i'm just gonna let the two of you talk, i'll be right upstairs! bye!" taylor waved and was gone in a second.
it was silent in the cozy living room. none of the girls knew what to say.
"i'm uh, i'm sorry i pulled away and just, y'know, left...i didn't even get to thank you for the incredible day you planned, at least not properly, not when the whole day was finished..." gracie mumbled, her lip almost bleeding from how much she'd been biting it.
"no, uh, you shouldn't apologise, it's alright, i mean— it wasn't cool that you just left, but uh, i understand," august smiled slightly, grabbing her friends hands to stop them from fidgeting. "but, uh, the kiss? what happened there? i mean, we were very close."
"yeah, i know, um...august i'm— i'm bisexual, i just thought i'd share it...i'm not saying anything should happen but, uh, now you know...."
gracie felt like crying. so did august. for two very different reasons. the brunette was overwhelmed, whereas the redhead was just feeling incredibly proud of her best friend.
"i'm so proud of you gracie, for coming out, i know it's difficult," august cooed, wrapping gracie in a tight embrace. the awkwardness of the past month had faded and had been replaced with a loving and caring atmosphere.
gracie didn't say anything. she just leaned her head back and rested it on august's chest, taking a deep breath in. she didn't exhale for a long time, so long that august was starting to get worried. but when gracie finally let the air out, words came with it, "i'd prefer if you, y'know, kept it to yourself...uh, only olivia knows, so, yeah...i don't really want anyone to know— not right now, at least, maybe taylor, but yeah..."
"i get that, i won't tell a soul," august smiled. she understood gracie, she'd been in the same situation, it was scary. she wanted gracie to come out on her own terms, to feel supported and loved throughout it all. and august would do anything for that to happen.
the girls sat in each others arms, taking in the silence. they knew taylor would come downstairs soon, bombarding them with a billion questions. august was gonna let gracie talk, she'd let the girl decide how much she wanted taylor to know.
"y'all done?" taylor yelled from the top of the stairs. when august grumbled a yes, the blonde ran down the staircase, almost tripping several times on her way. "everything good? did you two talk it out?" taylor was smiling widely when she saw the two girls cuddled up together.
august squeezed gracie gently, gesturing for her to take the lead.
"yeah, uh, we did," gracie nodded, twisting around till she was able to see taylor, "we're good, everything's good, it's perfect," she smiled, glancing up at august, "oh, and, uh, by the way, i'm bisexual, just so you know."
taylor wasn't shocked. she had never understood the concept of coming out, no one came out as heterosexual, so why should you have to come out as anything else? besides, she kind of already knew, or at least she assumed gracie wasn't as straight as she had previously claimed to be.
"cool!" taylor smiled, taking a seat on the couch, "so, you guys are together now or what?" she asked, pointing at the two young women.
both august and gracie shook their heads rapidly, and that made taylor laugh. she knew they'd end up together, she knew it from the start, she never doubted them.
