Prompt:
Despite the anguish beyond the walls, Rick and his wife find themselves lying in the grass on a warm summer evening, gazing up at the sky._____
"This almost feels normal," she said as she laid back on the soft grass, her eyes drifting to the sky with its abundance of illuminating colours as the sun began to set. "Remind me of our first date; that wasn't a date," she chuckled.
Despite what they knew threatened them beyond the walls, Rick had tried his hardest to bring some normality back into his and his family's lives.
He recalled the memories of their short, - date that wasn't a date- they lay on the grass of the large field they had found not long after chasing her dog for miles on end through her land and others.
It had meant to have been their first date, a date Rick had been nervous about for weeks prior. When he arrived at her farmhouse to take her out for a meal, she ran across the fronts, calling her dog back. He was only newly divorced and hadn't set out to find anyone so soon, but she was just what he needed, and he soon became just what she needed.
Rick chuckled out loud at the fond memory. She must have looked silly to many in a beautiful tight-fitting black dress, with rain boots that came to her knees, but to Rick, it was the most beautiful sight. However, if he had known their date would've ended in them being up to their eyes in dirt and sludge, he would've worn more appropriate clothing.
Two years later, they married, and a year later, the world decided to wreck itself. Bringing the dead back to life to roam the earth with only one desire: to feed.
No one was sure what day it was or what month exactly, but he knew that the last five years with his wife had been some of the best and scariest of his life. He didn't need a specific date to celebrate the love they had; every day they survived should be silently celebrated. Every day he got to love such an amazing, beautiful and hardworking woman was celebrated.
As he lay in the grass staring at the sky, his worries beyond the walls lay beside him in the grass in a forgotten heap. He turned to his wife and smiled as she closed her eyes slowly and soaked up the remaining warmth.
