That night I went to bed without saying a word to anyone. After I pushed Noah away, I knew what was next. I didn't care then... part of me doesn't care now. After Courtney calmed down, Cody tried to talk me into running back for Noah. I didn't respond to his pointless requests. What was the point in trying when he knew I wasn't letting up?
You might wonder what made me that upset in the first place, and to tell you the truth, I don't know for sure. Every death has sent me a little farther off the edge. Every stupid decision or question makes me want to stab somebody's eyes out. And every time Courtney taunts me I fight the urge to do a number of things to her... not always good things.
I woke up the next morning with a hesitant tap on the shoulder. It was DJ. He softly poked me while whispering my name. When I became conscious I started swatting him away... I had been waking up naturally the past two weeks and wasn't planning on changing that.
"Dude, get off of me!" I eventually shot up from my bed. He jumped back a little, but now I could see Owen and Geoff standing with him, strange looks daunting their faces.
"Eva's not happy." Geoff shook his head at me, "You need to see Cody, dude."
"Well he's going to have to wait then."
"No Duncan, seriously." DJ's eyes widened, "He's breaking down... he's blaming you for..."
"Just get dressed." Geoff looked at DJ before looking back at me, "We'll fill you in on the way." After some moaning and groaning, I got myself up. All I did was throw on my shirt, but I kept my pajama pants on.
When I made it outside the cabin, Eva stood with her arms crossed, staring at me like a bull seeing red. Courtney and Gwen were behind her, with seemingly mixed feelings. I was only a little worried.
Eva stayed close behind as the seven of us walked towards the beach. On the way, the guys filled me in...
Cody didn't sleep last night. Apparently he spent most of the night staring at me... not in a cute way, but like a 'serial killer plotting his next kill' way. Once the sun rose high enough, he knew he had to search for Noah... he had never come back to the cabins. He apparently "felt this urge" to go towards the beach, and when he did, he found Noah face down in the water. He tried to help him, he tried to get help for him, he tried to even wake him up, but he couldn't. By the time Eva found Cody, he was sobbing incoherently and pointing towards the water. Noah's body floated off to sea, likely becoming a sharks meal.
According to them, the only words he could get out were 'Noah', 'water', and 'Duncan'.
Once I saw the kid, I couldn't help but think of how much of a mess he was. Saying he was sobbing was an understatement... without context, he was a blubbering idiot. Izzy, who seemed to finally learn some sympathy, was rubbing his back while Bridgette and Trent attempted to whisper things to him. He didn't hear them. He didn't hear anything until Eva yelled my arrival from across the beach.
At first, it was completely silent. His head tilted up and he stared at me, his mouth gaped open the tiniest bit. Bridgette and Leshawana looked at each other before Cody's face turned to one of rage. I could practically hear the group behind me tense up as he started to run towards me, his fist in the air.
My face didn't change expression. Before Cody knew it, after a few quick punches on his part, I had him pinned down in the nastiest sand the world had ever seen... not just poisoned with litter, but now also blood.
Cody was laying down in the sand, trying everything he could to break from my grip, but I had my knee on his back and my hands on his shoulders. He wasn't going anywhere.
His thrashing and cursing quickly turned back to sobs, "Duncan, how could you do this to him? Why would you let that happen? What is wrong with you?!" His tears left the sand brown, but I couldn't help but chuckle to myself. Was it tragic on his part? Sure, but on mine? Some skinny little dude just tried to beat me up... I'm probably twice his weight in muscle, and I have the experience nobody else on this island would dare to have.
