There had been rumors the past few days that doctors had found a disease spreading throughout the state of California, Nova would only find out on her various social media accounts. She mainly browsed in her free time when she had nothing better to do. She had come home from work that day, wishing and cursing at herself for not attending school. When she returns to her parents, she sighs but quickly cheers up seeing her German Shepherd, Heda running towards her to greet her.
"Hey girl," she says petting her dog. Seeing her always brought a smile to Novas' face. She would go to feed her as her father David and mother Martha walked in from work. Novas' father would set a bag down with some electronics he brought home from work he would finish on.
"Hey, Nova we need to talk!" Martha would say from the dining room. When Nova finishes feeding Heda, she walks into the dining room and sits down looking exhausted as ever. She looks at her mother and father who are now sitting in front of her. She could not help but look between her parents to see how worried their expressions were.
Her father David was more distressed than worried, he looked as if he wanted to spill a secret that he was forced to hold back. "It is about that disease. They are making the state evacuate I guess, and we need to leave in the next three days. It is hard to explain and they won't tell us anything about it. Not even me."
"What the hell do you mean, haven't you seen the signs? Dad the government has been moving the military out of the state, they have been making small forts in the forests and they started long before any disease was announced."
"Nova, we told you to stay out of the forest," Martha would state with a tinge of disappointment in her voice. "You know how dangerous it is out there and it's no place for you in the woods."
"You don't know that, Mom. You know I want to be in the forestry service but you two will not help me get into school. You will help me pay for it and now I can't go to the school of my dreams since it's in northern California. All you do is think of yourselves and want me to go to those work events I never want to go to because it's never fun and we always fight. Well, I'm done listening! I'm staying here and I'm done always listening to you. Now Dad what are you working on today."
Her mother and father could not believe how Nova just spoke to them, they had wide eyes but didn't know what to say. Martha would just leave the room to go to work on dinner as her father quietly began to work on the particular electronic and add something to it that he hadn't done to the others he had brought home. Nova moves so she is sitting next to her father who leans closer to her to whisper.
"I have an idea of what this might be, however, if it is and you find out then they might take you. This is a kill code." he holds up a small piece of paper and then hands it to her "You must find this device and it will kill the rest. There is no sickness, however, if you stay, I have no clue if we will see each other again."
Nova's eyes widen as her father speaks to her. She looks at her "I need to tell my friends I cannot keep quiet about this. Dad this is massive." is all she says to him. She looks at the electronic components as if she were studying them before shaking her head in disbelief. "This can't be true."
"I am sorry. You must stay quiet about this, we can't have people panic any more than they already are, and we, you, me, and your mother, don't want to get hurt." he sighs "I know you want to help but you just can't."
