sixteen's theme - bittersweet symphony - the verve

OCTOBER 2007 - OXFORD

Summer was over, it had been since the day Felix died.

Ollie got sent home from Saltburn after Venetia killed herself, her not being able to deal with the emotional torment of her brother's death was the conclusion.

Her stone had been dropped and he was sent away, banished like a criminal in exile.

He was friendless once again at Oxford, no one dared to come near him, considering his two closest friends had died that summer.

He had seen Farleigh around, looking completely back to normal, like nothing horrible had happened to him, like his cousin and best friend hadn't met premature deaths.

Oliver wasn't in love with Felix. He knew everyone thought he was. But he wasn't.

At least Sir James had written him a fat cheque, for his troubles, before he was forcibly expelled from the estate, he no longer had to shop in Oxfam.

He didn't regret murdering Ariadne. He just wished things had turned out differently. He wished he hadn't been so careless.

Her mother had decided to have a case opened into her daughter's death, her body alcohol levels were low, which had been noted in the autopsy, so that ruled out death by intoxication, the trauma onto her head could not have been self inflicted due to the severity of them and they way in which they would of had to be obtained, which pointed directly to foul play.

The police automatically assumed it must have been Felix's doing as he was the last person present with the victim but Pasiphae and the Cattons were adamant that being violent was not in Felix's nature so that lead in the case was dropped.

All leads had been exhausted and the case had been closed with no conclusive evidence to find a murderer.

They would never know that the murderer had left his two victims to go to the dancefloor instead.

He didn't hear from the Cattons again. He supposed he never would.

Nothing felt the same without Felix and Ariadne, it was all macabre and boring now, even Michael fucking Gavey steered clear of Oliver now.

Oliver became a name that first years knew to avoid, unless they wanted to have the fates of Ariadne and Felix befall onto them.

Felix and Ariadne had turned into an urban myth at Oxford, people saying their ghosts haunted the place.

It was bullshit, ghosts weren't real.

But their legacies would live on, Oliver would never be able to extinguish their flames completely.
