Shashank's birthday party was a cozy affair. Everyone was wearing casual attires and chatting with each other. Shashank was standing near the bar area with his brother-in-laws, Raghbir and Abhimanyu. He was holding a glass of whiskey and taking slow sips when Abhimanyu, out of blue, said, “You like Miraya.”

“I don't.” Shashank denied calmly.

“But you like her.” Abhimanyu raised his eyebrows at Shashank.

“I don't like her, Abhi.”  Shashank told him sternly.

“C'mon, Shashank, you were staring at her all the time at the party last week where she was wearing a blue dress.”  Abhimanyu argued.

“It wasn't blue. She was wearing a black halter neck dress with matching black heels. A silver bracelet and a pair of diamond earrings.” Shashank described the entire look in one breath. And immediately regretted it when Abhimanyu and Raghbir's eyes widened in surprise.

Abhimanyu smirked and tsked, “Ah, but you don't like her.”

“Yeah, I don't.” He agreed in a weak and embarrassed voice.

It was just like saying you hate ice-cream and then eating three ice-cream buckets in a row.

And now Abhimanyu would tease him all the time about it. Shashank was mentally scolding himself for letting his crush on Miraya become so evident. He finished the whiskey and put the glass down before excusing himself.

He walked away from the guys and towards the exit of the garden to get away from the embarrassing situation. But someone crashed into him or maybe he crashed into someone.

Miraya winced rubbing her arm, “You are such a giant.”

Shashank pretended to be annoyed by her attitude, even though he found it adorable.

“It's not my fault you walk around blindly.” He remarked while rolling his eyes.

Miraya gaped at his audacity. She was holding a gift bag in her hand and she put it in his hands. She smiled tightly, “Happy Birthday, Mr Shashank Agnihotri,” and hit his foot with her heel.

Shashank said a loud Ouch before he began jumping like a kangaroo on one foot. Miraya smirked before entering the garden. Shashank glared at her dissappearing figure before walking away with the gift bag.

Well, he loved messing with her. But this time it went a little too far.

At night, Shashank was sitting in his room and replying to some emails. While his cousins Ansh and Aas were opening his birthday gifts. Ansh's eyes landed on the sky blue gift bag.

“Shashu Bhai, who gave this gift to you?” He asked Shashank while showing him the gift bag.

Shashank glanced at the bag and replied, “Miraya,” before he went back to typing on his laptop.

Ansh smiled mischievously, “You and Miraya don't like each other. So I'll take this gift.”

That was all it took for Shashank to put the laptop away and snatch the gift bag from Ansh.

“It's mine.” He said quite possessively.

“You are reacting as if Miraya is your girlfriend.” Ansh rolled his eyes.

His comment left Shashank off-gaurd. Why is it so obvious that he likes Miraya even though he tries his best to hide it? He hides it pretty well even though he ended up explaining her entire look from a party that happened a week ago. But still he hides it nicely even though he is possessive about the birthday gifts he received from her. Yet he hides it perfectly even though his eyes scream to the world how much he admires and adores her. Shashank was behaving like a kid who hides his face with a pillow and thinks no one will find him.

Miraya was about to take her sleeping pills when she heard a knock on the door and her father Rudraksh Yaduvanshi entered the bedroom. His eyes landed on the three sleeping pills on her palm.

“Miraya, have you increased the dosage of sleeping pills?” He asked with concern.

Miraya nodded while putting the medicine away as her father sat down beside her on the bed.

“Miraya, you have been taking sleeping pills since your teenage years. Your body have become immune to them. I think it's time you stop taking them.”

“Baba, I have tried countless times to stop taking sleeping tablets but... that nightmare never lets me sleep peacefully. I can't sleep peacefully without taking tablets.”

“Miraya, how about you start dating someone?” He suggested hesitantly.

“Baba, what does it have to do with my nightmare disorder?” Miraya frowned.

“Umm... you know, physical contact during sleep reduces anxiety and improves quality of sleep.” It felt quite awkward to say that to his daughter.

“Just say you want me to get married.” Miraya shook her head.

“Miraya, I'm not pressurizing you or anything. But it's okay to have someone you can rely on.”

“Well, I have you and Maa. I've been relying on you since you adopted me.” She smiled.

“Beta, every child relies on their parents. But having a partner to rely on is a lot different.”

Miraya raised her hands in defeat, “Alright, I don't want to talk about it. I will get into relationship if I felt like dating someone.”

“I hope you find that someone soon.” He patted her head before getting up.

“Good night, Baba.”

“Good night.”  And he walked out of the bedroom.

She smiled. She could understand that her parents don't want her to spend her whole life alone. But she never found someone who could strike the cords of her heart.

She took the sleeping pills and laid down on the bed, falling asleep in a while.

The scene of a stormy night unfolded in front of her closed eyes. She saw her four-year-old self getting abandoned in front of an orphanage by her biological mother. It's been twenty four years to the traumatic night when she became an orphan but she still remembered that woman's face clearly. And every morning when Miraya looked at her reflection in the mirror, she would see a glimpse of that woman in herself. She looked a lot like her and she hated it.

A sigh of helplessness escaped her lips as she left her cozy bed and pulled out her black leather diary from the drawer of her study table. Holding a black pen in her hand, she collected her thoughts before scribbling down them in the diary.

“I hate that woman who abandoned me. I hope I don't encounter my mother again. Because if she ever re-entered my life, I'll ruin her."

She wanted to write more. But no words could express how much she hated that woman. That nightmare was haunting her since childhood and maybe it will haunting her all her life. Reminding her of how her mother left her at the doorsteps of an orphanage. And with every night of seeing that nightmare, her hate for that woman only intensified.
