In terms of how safe they felt, the new surveillance system helped. Not completely, and certainly not enough to let any of them forget what was lurking beneath the castle, but it helped.

The eight of them were painfully aware that the creature was still there.

Still somewhere under Hogwarts.

Still waiting.

The knowledge sat in the back of their minds every waking moment like a weight they could never quite put down. Some days it felt lighter than others. Some days they almost forgot about it entirely. Then a strange noise would echo through the corridors, or a door would creak open unexpectedly, and suddenly every muscle in their bodies would tense.

The fear never truly left.

It simply became something they carried.

At least now they knew it wasn't wandering the halls looking for them.

A few days after the terrifying encounter in the foyer, Bill had sought them out during breakfast to give them an update. The news had spread quickly around the adults involved.

The parents had seen it.

The Aurors had seen it.

The Order had seen it.

Even Newt Scamander, who had spent most of his life believing there was good in every magical creature, had finally admitted that whatever this thing was, it wasn't something that belonged anywhere near children.

That revelation alone had been enough to send a chill through the group. If Newt thought it needed to be stopped, then it really was as dangerous as they feared.

The adults had become more determined than ever to get rid of it.

To find it.

To understand it.

To destroy it if necessary.

It didn't make the students feel better exactly, but it was comforting to know that for once every adult seemed to be taking the threat seriously.

No one was dismissing them anymore. No one was telling them they had imagined it. No one was suggesting they were overreacting.

They had seen the terror with their own eyes. And so life continued. Because it had to.

Classes resumed. Homework returned. Essays piled up. Exams loomed ever closer. The world stubbornly refused to stop turning simply because a monster lived beneath the school.

The return to normality felt strange at first.

Almost wrong.

The first morning they walked back into their classrooms, Sloane had caught herself glancing toward every dark corner she passed. Harry still sat with his back against walls whenever possible. Hermione jumped whenever someone spoke unexpectedly behind her.

Even Draco had developed a habit of checking over his shoulder before entering empty rooms.

The habits had become automatic. Instinctive. Survival mechanisms. Yet day by day, things slowly settled.

Not entirely. Never entirely.

But enough. Enough that they could laugh again. Enough that they could complain about homework again. Enough that they could tease each other during meals and spend evenings in the common room pretending they were ordinary teenagers.

Though there was one reminder none of them could escape. The guards. Every single day there was a security officer stationed outside their suite.

Every.
