"I lost..." Ash murmured, unable to believe it. "Woah..." Gary murmured, shocked by how easily Lucas won, "Lucas is better than I thought." Oak nodded in agreement, also impressed. "How could I have lost? I should have won since Lucas taught me all about type advantages. Wait... I didn't even know bro's pokemon's type," Ash realised, feeling foolish. "Now Ash, you need to heal your Charmander. You don't simply leave a pokemon in pain after it battled so hard for you," Oak reminded him. Ash quickly looked over to Lucas, Gary doing the same as he was the only one of the trio that knew how to heal pokemon. But Lucas was busy thanking Rhyhorn. "Ash, Gary, have you still not learned the basics of pokemon first aid?" Oak asked, worried for Ash's and Gary's careers as trainers if they didn't know how to heal their pokemon since they will have many battles in the future. "Now you two will be assigned to Ria to learn basic Pokemon first aid," Oak said, deciding the best course of action. "Ria? You mean that girl?" Gary asked, sounding scared. "Ria!? Professor, are you serious? I can learn from Lucas, not Ria," Ash argued with similar fear as Lucas finished healing Charmander.
"Your battle was certainly entertaining, Ash. You and Lucas have clearly learned a lot working on my ranch," Oak admitted as Ash smiled at the praise, "Though it seems you'll have a lot of training to do if you want to try and win Lucas' starter again." "The egg is your starter?" Ash asked, jealous. "You received your starter in advance. Of course that would only happen for you," Gary said, knowing his grandfather favoured Lucas for all his work on the ranch. "Yep," Lucas agreed, smiling, "Now, I need to get the egg home." Saying this, Lucas turned and headed off before Ria came over, chuckling internally at Ash and Gary's imminent suffering. "Finally Professor told me to train you two," Ria said as she walked over to Gary and Ash, "Don't worry Professor, I'll turn these two into first aid experts when I'm done with them." "Ria!" Ash and Gary exclaimed nervously.
Ria Olliver is a nine year old girl from Pallet Town and like Gary, Lucas and Ash loved Pokemon a lot. She despised seeing Pokemon get hurt, but knew many enjoyed battling, so worked hard to become an expert in pokemon medicine. Because of this she despised incompetent trainers because their recklessness often caused their pokemon to receive unnecessary injuries. "Don't worry Professor, I'll have them trained up in no time," Ria assured the elderly man as he walked back into his lab. Whenever Lucas was busy Ash and Gary had always had to go to Ria for help, though they were always scared to do so. This was because they had to pay for her to heal their pokemon. Ash and Gary had actually stopped some of their battles so they wouldn't have to go to her. They now only have pokemon battles when Silver was there because the price for Ria to heal their pokemon was a thunder shock. The first time they had not been hit with the thundershock but as they started going more and more often Ria began to have them shocked, calling them irresponsible trainers. Ria feels that the pair battled without strategy which only hurt their pokemon more. This was why Gary and Ash were scared of her. Lucas had also called her the moment his battle with Ash had ended, hoping it would distract him and Gary from the Pokemon egg, and he was glad to see it had worked. "Pichu, zap," Ria ordered Pichu, who was sitting on her shoulder. Pichu glowed golden as it sent the thundershock attack at Ash and Gary, causing them pain as their skeletons became visible. "This is why I hate her," Ash and Gary thought to themselves. And this was how their training began.
Ash and Gary quickly realised the hopelessness of trying to escape from their lessons with Ria, knowing she would enjoy having Pichu use thunder shock on them if the pair tried anything funny. "I heard you Ash were battling for Lucas' pokemon egg?" Ria said, having been told by Lucas why the Professor now wanted her to teach the duo about pokemon medicine. "Yeah," Ash admitted meekly. "You can't even take care of an injured pokemon. How were you planning to look after a pokemon egg?" Ria asked, unimpressed. "I, ah, I..." Ash mumbled, trying to find an excuse. "So you don't even know how to take care of an egg. Yet you were fighting for a pokemon egg," Ria said angrily, not pleased. Taking care of a pokemon egg you see was far tougher than most would think. Pokemon eggs need to always be kept at an optimal temperature, not to mention requiring energy fluids at all times. If not, the egg will be unable to hatch. It is because of this that it is so hard for humans to care for a pokemon egg. "You two, this egg is Silver's, if I hear that you are fighting him or each other for it again, I won't be pleased," Ria warned the pair with a creepy smile, "Now, follow me. There's a lot to teach." Saying this, Ria led them into the lab's medical bay. The reason that Ash and Gary have not already learned basic first aid when all trainers that get a starter from Oak are practically required to know it is because Gary had already hired a doctor for his journey. While Ash simply didn't understand and had no interest in pokemon medicine.
Now that the battle was over Lucas quickly headed back home, pokemon egg now held in an incubator. Lucas quickly placed it down in his room while pulling out the book the Professor had given him on Lucario, Riolu, the Lucario Kingdom and Aura. Lucas smiled slightly to himself, excited that there was so much more to learn.
