Katara found herself pregnant.
At first, she mistook it for exhaustion or sickness, since she had spent the past few weeks crying non-stop for Aang and for everything else she'd lost. But now there was no mistaking it – she was growing a baby inside of her. Zuko's baby.
She was still sad, but that thought made her days brighter.
She told Zuko. He was careful at first, asking, "Are you sure?" and when Katara said she was, he seemed ecstatic. Throughout all of her pregnancy he was very careful with her, and stopped touching her intimately once she passed the first trimester. When they couldn't hide it anymore, Zuko told his father at breakfast. He wasn't as happy as Zuko was, but they needed an heir, so he didn't oppose.
Azula, who had heard it all, huffed indignantly, "Great, all our Nation needs is another half breed. Do you think the Fire Nation would be very happy to have a dark-skinned Fire Lord in the upcoming future, father? Or a waterbender at that?"
This didn't land with Zuko, but when he sent a lightning stream her way, and that shut her up.
But her words kept replaying in Katara's head.
"Do you think our baby could look more like me than you or be a waterbender?" she asked Zuko one night when they were ready to go to sleep. Her bedroom had now become theirs.
Zuko kissed the crown of her head. "Don't worry about it. However it turns out, we'll deal with it."
