The next morning, I woke up at around 9:00. I rubbed my eyes slightly, and sat on the edge of my unmade bed.
I glanced at my light yellow phone, wondering if it would be too early to call River.
I shrugged and picked up the phone from the receiver and started dialing his home number.
It rang twice before a woman picked it up. "Hello?" She asked, and I assumed it was his mom.
"Um, hi, could I speak with River please?" There was a silence.
"May I ask who's calling?"
"Hana, one of River's friends," I said a bit awkwardly.
"Oh, he's talked a lot about you," she said, trailing off slightly grimly. "River's in the hospital," she added quietly.
I froze.
"What? What happened?" I asked, slightly shocked.
"He was walking home and I guess he collapsed.. that's what the E.R. told us."
"Oh," was all that came out of my mouth.
"Don't worry," she continued, "they said he'll be alright. Also, he did mention that he wanted to see you."
I smiled to myself, then said, "Thank you, Mrs. Phoenix." "Any time," she said before hanging up.
I hung up and threw on a pair of old converse and an old black sweater with jeans and ran to the hospital. When I checked in for visiting hours, I walked quickly to his room, almost bursting through the doors.
I ran up to the hospital bed he was laying in, and examined the IV and patches hooked up to his chest and arms. "Oh my god," I said, as he stared at me.
"It's not that bad," he shrugged slightly. "I feel so bad," I said as he gave me a quick look of confusion.
"It's not your fault, Hana," he said.
I shook my head slightly and looked down. I don't know why I feel bad about this, I really don't. Everything has just felt like my fault lately.
He gave me a small smile. "I'll be out of here by tomorrow." I returned the smile, and sat in the chair by his bed.
"Do you remember anything from last night?" I asked, and he nodded. "I remember being near my house when my head started spinning and my chest tightened up. That's really it, though."
"I'm just glad you're okay."
We sat there talking for so long, the nurse had to drag me out by the hood of my sweater. I waved bye to him, and walked down the empty white halls.
I walked home as darkness settled around me, making me feel uneasy. I ran the rest of the way to my house and was greeted by the smell of mashed potatoes and stew.
I smiled faintly and went up to my room, glad that River was okay.
