My heart quickened its beat, and my brain became unable to give any orders to my body. Not in a thousand dreams could I have seen such a possibility. Alex Evans wanted to know what I felt for him, and I couldn’t answer.

His grip moved from my shoulders to my arms, and he pleaded with a tone of desperation.

“Amelie, please, don’t stay silent. Tell me what you feel for me.”

“Stop, stop, don’t go on!” I demanded, out of myself, and I broke down in tears. “Oh my God, how could I forget my manners! I’m the worst...”

Tears ran down my cheeks, and my voice broke with every word. The vulnerability of that moment overwhelmed me. Not only was I in front of the man who occupied my thoughts, but he was also asking for sincerity in a territory as delicate as my own feelings. It was a moment that seemed to have come straight out of one of my favorite novels, but now it was part of my reality, and I didn’t know how to handle it.

“Don’t think that,” he pleaded desperately. “It’s hard for me to be like this, Amelie, but I can’t hold back anymore. What I feel for you is real, and I think you’re feeling this too.”

“Real? What are you talking about?”

He held me tighter, trying to make me react. I felt scared of what I was feeling. His strong hands demanded an answer from me, and once again, his lips let out a plea.

“Please, Amelie!”

“I... I don’t... I don’t know, I don’t know what’s happening to me!”

I pulled away from his arms to fall onto the ground covered with dry leaves, defeated by my own mind, struggling with tears and with everything I was feeling.

Slowly, I began to lift my gaze and discovered on his face a sign of defeat. His eyes looked sad, and I couldn’t bear to see him like that. I thought about speaking to him, saying something, but he beat me to it.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have forced you. Don’t answer me.”

The tone of his voice was somber, and a sense of guilt washed over me, accompanied by an urgent need to say something to try and dispel the sadness in his eyes.

“Alex, I’m scared. I don’t know what’s happening to me. I don’t know what I feel for you.”

He observed me without uttering a word, his expression shifting from sadness and defeat to what seemed like surprise. I had to lay it all out, what I was going through with him, what I was feeling, my fears…

“I don’t know what this is that I’m feeling or what name to give it,” I began, tears streaming down my face. “I have a lot of doubts, and I think you might be confused too.”

Alex looked directly into my eyes, and we fell into silence. For a few seconds, only the sound of the wind through the branches of the trees could be heard.

He approached and sat down just to my left, his gaze now fixed on the ground.

“Do you think I’m not doubting, Amelie?” he asked. “Right now, the only thing that’s certain for me is that this feeling grows stronger every day. I want to see you, I want to be close to you constantly.”

“I think you’re forgetting a small detail,” I said, also looking at the ground. “You’re getting married in three days. What’s the point of telling me all this now?”

“Could you forget about that for a moment?” he asked, his breath catching. “I never even thought I’d muster the courage to confess this to you.”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t,” I told him, angrily wiping away my tears. “You didn’t have to tell me anything. You should have stayed silent.”

“I’m sorry too, Amelie... but this was burning me up inside. I had to tell you what I’m going through.”
